Hello

I am in need of some help and advice. We have had our Tank for about 3 months now, and everything seems fine. Well apart from some lodgers that we have aquired somehow. (Snails)

We have 2 Guppies.. 2 Mollies.. 4 Neons.. 1 red tail shark..

Sorry if these arent their proper names but like title says, I'm a Newbie and have a lot to learn :)

When starting the tank we decided to go for real plants, and when adding them to the water i noticed a baby snail on one of them.. Not thinking anything of it left it, thinking it would look good in tank.. but now to my horror our tank is full of them... does anyone know how i can get rid of these or what to do.. are they doing any harm in my tank..

They dont look very nice and want to get them out..

I did a complete water change but they still there..

Help please

Thankyou in advance

Sue

Hello Sue, I'm quite new too :)
One answer to your problem
Clown loaches, without a doubt
We can hear our loaches crunching the snails, they love them

Yes clown loaches love to eat them, but they need a big tank. There are various chemicals u can buy to get rid of them which a friend of mine used, but i personally havent used. Another way is to put a slice of lettuce into an empty clean jar, and place this in the tank just b4 lights out, then in the morning just b4 the lights come on, remover the jar and hopefully its full of snails! but again i havent tried this myself. The snails wont do any harm to ur tank, they just breed very fast as u've found out! Water changes will not get rid of them at all. I have afew types of snail in my tank, but for some reason they never breed, which is great cus i kinda like em, but not when theres so many the floor looks like its moving ;) lol

Good luck!

i would not recommend a clown loach for teh fish you currently have. they get to big. If you want to go with a loach, I would reccommend a yo yo loach. they stay smaller, but they do get aggressive with age, as will your red tailed shark.

Hi all..
Thanks for the info, Ive been looking into the Clown Loach and they recommend a pair, is that correct? Also I didnt have any lettuce so someone suggested a slice of cuecumber.. I secured it on the bottom of the tank, but when I woke in the morning.. No snails attatched? maybe they didnt like the cuecumber? lol

Anyway I'll keep trying, I'll get some lettuce today..

Also on the red tail shark matter, I have noticed, it keeps chasing my white Mollie round the tank. It doesnt chase any of the others, just that one.. any idea's? :-(

Hope my tank isn't too small for my two clown loaches
It's 36x18x12.
We got three loaches, as they prefer company, but one of them died :-(
They are fantastic little guys, so funny. I daren't get another one or two in case it upsets the peace that we have at the moment. I love the way that you see one of them laid on it's side on the gravel and think it's popped off, then the other one comes up for a sniff and the first one shoots off :fun: We thought the one that died was playing, but it never moved again! We hope they'll be ok after the outbreak of white spot has gone.

I also used to have a tropical comunity aqaurium that had two clown loaches in and i brought them very small and not only do they grow very large they seemed to grow quite quickly. People tell me if im talking poo
