Hi there I am a new tropical fish keeper and need some advice please as I recently set up my tank and included a few tetras as a start up to see how I got on. Tank been running for 3 weeks now and I noticed what looked like white eggs in the gravel a few days ago(now looks more like algae with longer strands). We lost one of our phantom tetra's yesterday - it looked like it was covered in white spots/bubbles and it was holding its fins close to its body. Two other phantoms have bubbles on them and don't seem happy. We have a couple of neon tetra's that look like they have one or two spots on them but otherwise seem well. Please could someone confirm what this is ?? white spot or something else so we know what treatments to buy.
Many thanks

Really sorry - tried to take photos but camera not good enough - could you give best guess from description I gave earlier - really worried that we might lose all the fish if we don't try something but only have a general pet shop in our town and they certainly aren't fish experts....

If the bubbles are under the fishes skin, you need to lower the oxygen diffusion in the tank as you could be dealing with a problem created by super saturation of oxygen which causes bubbles to enter the fishes body (blood stream etc) and ultimately kills them.

If, on the other hand, you are dealing with white spot, I'd advise that you first deal with any water parameter issues (i.e. high ammonia or nitrite) as it would appear from the above quote that you omitted to complete any kind of a fishless cycle. Once your ammonia and nitrite levels are at 0 ppm, you need to go about treating the white spot with a good medicinal treatment from Esha or Waterlife.
