I got a new batch of fry on the 4th of July and noticed this morning that 2 of the 14 are bent. They are almost in the shape of a u. I am really confused and dont know if there could be a genetic disorder or maybe something is wrong with them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do you think it will kill them or will they be able to survive bent? They are not acting sick and i checked all of the water peramiters and all are fine. Please give me an idea.

Hi! I know fish can have deformities on the spine, but usually it's in S shape. My book says it either comes from inbreeding, or adverse water condition or systemic bacterial infection... n no treatment possible... sorry for the news! :/ :(

Hope ur frys will get thru this!

Do you think that it will continue to get worse and affect the rest of them? Also the mother is again getting bigger, but i think it is from my male, do you think the same thing will occur if it is genetic that it is from her or could it just be this batch?
Sandy

I think it's in their best interests, to cull them now.

If it's guppies that you have i would say it's due to alot of inbreeding through the strains, i two guppy fry who have deformity of the spine due to the genes from mum, they have coped well as they are but i wont be using them as breeding stock.

How long have you had your female? and How many broods has she had?

I have only had the mom for a little over a month now, she was pregnant when i got her. This is only the first batch i have gotten as all of the other pregnant females died before giving birth. I think its genetic, but i dont know what to do about it. I dont know if i should eliminate her as a breeder and put her alone or is possibly the ther females that i got at the same time. I dont know if she will continue to have deformed babies or since she is now bread by my male if i will get a normal batch. Sandy

:( Hi
Sorry to hear about your fry. I am quite a newbie but I do know a little about genetics. Could be a one off, especially as there are only two in the brood. But if mum is pregnant again you may soon find out. I don't know what the more experienced breeders think, but I think you should be careful not to breed from any of this brood. If the problem in genetic the other fry may be carriers - not show the deformity but their offspring will. cool_jool

You see if you have the same problem in your next batch of fry, i always find that most of my fry wont make it before 8wks old, at 4 wks they started to belly slide and then they would put any weight on (bellys were thin) out of 4 lots of fry i have only had 6 survivers that have made it to adult hood 2males and 4 females.

I have just had 39 baby platies and about 30 odd guppies but most of my guppies have died and i only have about 15 platies left as they have got Gill worms and Skin Fluke infections poor mitts which they are under treatment for and i am hoping to save the rest.
