Hey!!

I have a 64L tank with 6 glowlight tetras in it. The 6 glowlights were all really happy and swimming round so i decided to add some more fish to my tank today. I added 6 green neon tetras (similar to neon tetras).

When i first added them to the tank they were fine and swimming round in a big shoal with the glowlights, however after being in the tank for a few hours the green neons started to dart around the back of the tank like doing really fast lengths and now they just keep huddled togeather in a corner of the tank. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with them??

Please help.

I heard that they are not keen on bright light so have dimmed the light to make it darker for them but has made no difference.

Thanks :)

what are your water stats? ammonia, nitrite, nitrate,ph

did you cycle because if you didnt added 6 fish at once could cause an ammonia spike and a mini cycle

tom_os is correct...

we need to know water stats, and also how long you cycled for mate ;)

How long you climatised the new fish for.

Hi,

Yes i cycled.

levels are:

Nitrate - 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
Ammonia - 0ppm
Ph - between 6.8 and 7.

I checked my levels this morning before going for new fish, the other fish have been in the tank over a week and i have had no problems with them.

Thanks.

How long you climatised the new fish for.

they were in the bag for 20mins and then over another 20min period i added a little of the water in my tank every 4 mins.

What your tap nitrate reading and do you have live plants.

Darting can be bad water quality, toxins, ph shock, parasites, stray voltage in a tank, overdose of meds.

Always test bag water in ph and temp this way you know how long to climatise them for.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Are the fish pale with clamped fins.

yes i have 2 live plants.

My tap nitrate level is 0ppm.

how do you mean bad water?

Thanks

Just saying why fish dart.

I Would keep a close eye on them for tiny white spots.

bad water is bad water stats. do you have the stats for the water as it is now?

Yes i just did the test as to why i took ages to reply before they are:

Nitrate - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Ammonia - 0ppm
Ph - between 6.8 and 7.

Thanks

is your nitrate really 0?

mines always moving between 5-10ppm

anyway! keep an eye out ;)

If the tank only a couple of weeks old I doubt its cycled.

Yes, I agree that the tank isn't yet cycled.

Cycling often takes 6-10 weeks.

What sort of water test kit are you using? liquid or test strips? also what brand is the test kit?

Be prepared for a lot of hard work to keep all 12 fish alive through a cycle, you may be better trying to take some back to your lfs if you can. Tetra's are certainly not the best fish to be using if you are wanting to do a fish in cycle, you want something like platies or zebra danios or better still do a fishless cycle.
