I have these two platies. One male, one female. They always swim together. They are never apart. Recently I noticed the female at the surface. Not in the sick way (Fins aren't clamped, and she isn't shaking) but whenever the male swims to her, she snips at him to go away. I know she is pregnant (I am not sure how far along though, probably 4 or 5 weeks) I have never seen her do that to the male, even when she gave birth the first time.

Amonia and nitrate levels are low to none (Not sure of the exact number), I have an airation stone, an aqua clear 150 (For a ten gallon tank), and the tank is crystal clear.

I am wondering if the male is exhausting her. I am not sure, since he isn't chasing her. But mabye he is just bothering her to mate (Even though she is pregnant). I have never seen her act that way. Please help!

i think she is really close to her due date and the male is bugging her! do you have a breeder net or another tank to put her in he maybe stressing her out also try giving her some blood worms or more food it'll claim her down a bit!!

it take 4 -6 weeks before fry are born so she is really close to give birth

Sure does so I hope you are ready for it...you should put her in a breeding net like suggested. Feeding her some livefood will make her feel a bit better :D as would a nice water change.

I changed the water, and I fed her some frozen blood worms. Actually, now that I turn the lights off she isn't acting all wierd. I have a breeder tank, but I dont want to put her in and leave her there (Once put her in too early, felt so bad when she became all scared.). I was really afriad she was sick when I saw her fins where clamped. But once I fed her and turned off the lights her fins where spread like an eagle. And I noticed the male nipping at her underside, and chasing her in the dark. He is such a rooster! lol

Tis true love at it's best

if i were you i would add another female to the tank, the ratio should be at LEAST 2females for every male. the male will want to mate all the time and is probably stressing the female out, rather she is about to give birth or not.

Hi ye i think you need 1 or 2 more females becauise he is stressing her out to much and he can stress her out so much that she can get diseaes such as white spot.
So it would be a good idea hope i have helped please tell me how she gets on.

another thing to add to what everybody else said is, buy another two females. Then while one female is about to disspense loads of fry, the male would be buggind, courthing and annoying the rest of the females and keep away from the hormone unbalanced one! hehe. hope that helps..
p.s i agree with all the stuff said above!

Problem is I am maxed out. I have an angel, 3 tetra, the two platies a guppie and two cats. I can probably give my sister the guppie, but I might need another platy?

oh, fair enough. But adding another female platy is the only thing i can suggest to give the other female platy a rest from a horny male. That is, apart from getting another tank which is larger and continue to expand in that...
