hi there is it possible to keep a male or female betta in a tank with no heater in??i currently own a 155litre tank housing my tropical fish but i have a old tank lying around which i would like to set up! i have heard they can be kept without one as long as the temperature of the water is sustained???
also one more thing a tank i have is a plastic one, would i be able to place a heater in it or not??
thanks

whats the room temp.It is advisable 2 have a heateras the temp wont be able to change and shock the fish

What size is the tank?
Ideally, you should have a heater unless your room temp is about 76.
I have used small mini heaters by the company called Hydor in my acrylic tanks, but you need to make sure the tank is at least 2 gallons or it'll overheat.

i aint exactly sure on the room temperature but would i be ok to place a heater in this tank as it is plastic??? what is the min temperature for the room to be at?? thanks

What size is the tank?
That's what it all depends on.

The minimum temp should be around 74 degrees, which most normal people don't keep their rooms at...

ok well i have checked over it and it turns out it will hold 5gallons of water so will that be ok??? thanks

Yep, surely.
You will want to get a heater where you can specifically set the temperature on it rather than just adjust it up or down.

And also pick up one of those thermometers that you can stick inside the tank w/a suction cup. Should work fabulously! :)

Fun!
We LOVE pics here at the forum, so when you're done setting it up and have your fish in it....

*wink wink*

will do as soon as he is in and is settled :D should i place any more fish in with him maybe a few females or should i leave it just for him??
thanks

Nope, no females - they'll kill each other. And no other males, either for the same reason.
About the only other thing you could try putting in there with him is a little african dwarf frog, but make sure you have a lid that is pretty secure so he can't crawl out. Which can be kinda tricky, considering that you need to have a tank that leaves air spaces at the top for the bettas.

What a happy betta he will be!!
Just a sidenote - pay careful attention to how he does with the current in that tank. I had a bad experience where the current was too much for him and he ended up dying from the amount of stress he went through while in that tank.

Good luck!

 No females in with a male unless you are breeding and then only for a short time. They will fight and could kill one or the other, the least you would have is very torn up and unhappy bettas :-(

ohhh ok then thanks very much for the help :D :D i think im going to a fish store tomora to find a heater n everythink! the only problem is that where i live they dont sell many varietes of males just the usual one no crontails :( but hey im happy with the 1's that they do sell!!!:>
