Help Me Identify Dads Fish :-)

Hi Guys,

My dad has had a tank for a while, he started with leopard danios, neons and guppies to get the tank started and he's been quite successful. The tank was quite empty so a few days ago he went out and bought some more fish but he didn't get the names. He was told they are good community fish though. Can anyone help identify the species? Thanks

Glass catfish, dwarf gourami, bleeding heart tetras, pearl gourami, angelfish,some sought of tetra, balloon molly.
- In order of appearance.

They are.... in order of appearance

1, Glass Catfish
2. Dwarf Gouramie (Male)
3. Pearl Gouramie (Female)
4. Pearlscale Angel... sex unable to tell.. (esp. at that age)
5. Black skirt (or Black widow) female
6. Serpae Tetrae.. (the visible one is the male)

Edit... Oh!... & then I did not see the hidden fish...

With the Angel in frame... is an ordinary Goldfish

With your Serpaes... there is a Balloon Molly.

Glass Catfish. Grows up to 6 inches and needs to be kept in a shoal of 6 or more

Left - Male Dwarf Gourami. Can be aggressive. Right - Serpae Tetra/ Again, shaols of 6 or more are needed.

Angelfish. Grows up to 8 inches, can eat smaller fish. Due to height, tank must be 18 inches tall or higher. Bottom left - Fancy Goldfish. Is a coldwater fish needs 20 gals for one, should really be in a pond or it's own coldwater tank.

In bottle - Balloon Molly. Good community fish

Sounds like your dad has bought these on impulse, and on fish store advice, which is generally rubbish. Can you give us info on the tank size, how long it's been set up, other inhabitants etc.?

Yes I wasn't happy when I came back my holidays and he had went out and bought these, I was wanting to take it easy and slowly and add a species at a time to the tank. The tank is 20 Gal. It has been up for about two months. The species above have all been bought in twos. There are also 5 neons, three guppies, two black and white mollys and two female japanese fighting fish which you rarely see. I think the tank is now a bit overcrowded.

Here is a picture of the whole tank. What do you think?

Just for my own education, why Serpae Tetra? - are they not Flame Tetra?

So in a 20gal you have:

5 Neons - fine
3 Guppies - fine
2 Mollies - probably ok, may be brackish species
2 Japanese fighting fish - if these are Betta Splendens, this is bad, esp if one or both are male. Are their fins long and flowing, or short? Do you have a pic?
2 Glass catfish - too big for the tank, should be in a shoal
2 Dwarf Gourami - if you have 2, and they are males, they will fight and one may die.
2 Pearl Gourami - as above
2 Angelfish - too big for the tank, will attack neons and betta
2 Goldfish - should be in a pond
2 Serpae Tetras - should be in a shoal

I'd take back the glass catfish, angelfish and goldfish. Depended on genders, you'd have to lose some fighting fish and gouramis. Worst case scenario, this leaves you with:

5 neons
3 guppies
2 mollies
1 Dwarf/Pearl gourami
2 Serpae tetras

In which case I'd get 4 more Serpae tetras and possibly research some bottom dwellers - corys or a bristlenose plec

Flame tetra have no black on them, all their fins are red. The one in the pics has a black dorsal fin

Its two female short fin japanese fighting fish, quite small.

Here is two pics of the smaller Dwarf Gourami , I think it is a female. The two have not fought at all.

Another pic of the Pearl Gourami, i have a feeling they are both males. I'll need to get a better pic of them. This is madness : - |

OP - be warned. Many of your fish are unsuitable for your tank or will fight-eat each other. You will also get an ammonia spike from adding that many fish, and ammonia kills fish. Please take the members advice on what the species are and look them up. Also read this link, particularly the bits on setting up a new tank, picking fish and cycling:
