1ppm Nitrite is high and toxic.. Ammonia and nitrite are killers. keep below .25 and aim for 0.
Large water change straight off and retest .. again if still above .25
Its a chore I know but your fish cant.. CANT live in toxic water.
you are doing the right thing by testing and adjusting.
If you lax.. :rip: they will die. either now or later as the damage is irreversible ,

its been awhile since i posted but the fish are fine now :D , im now looking at buying a Juwel 240 rio classic for my fish as every1 was saying that the tank is to small 240L should be better for them :) my partner tried putting another fish in the tank :/ another red jewel, this resulted in my red jewel going extremely red and aggressive, the fish was in the tank for an hour b4 i decided it had to go. i have the fish to one of my fiends and it is doin quite well after its little ordeal.

First of all, get a larger aquarium for cichlids.

Second, do not use rainwater as a sole source of water, it is to soft for African Rift Lake Cichlids.

Third, If your tap truly reads ph in that range, try dilluting the highly alkaline tap water with about 70% rainwater and 30% tap water.

If none of this works, I just don't know what more to tell ya.
