My tank water is really hot, and there is nothing being displayed on my strip thermometer on the outside of my Jewel Rio 180.

On the heater, which way is hotter, and which is colder? Is anti-clockwise on or off? :(

anti clockwise turns it down

Thanks, I turned it down all the way, but it was still heating the tank.
I've turned the heater off for now as the temperature is 86*F+, I think it's broken.

I have a backup heater somewhere, but it's only small. Would it be alright?

On my vision 260 if I turn it clockwise it gets colder, and I'm pretty sure its same on my rio 180. I think if you look closely theres a + and - symbol on opposite sides of heater.

On another note, the strip thermometers are pretty useless, its worth investing a more reliable type like a digital or even a glass one.

EDIT: My vision 260 is definately clockwise to go colder, and theres definately - and + symbols in that order (so looking from above I turn mine clockwise to go colder)

you'll need to check then cos my rekord 60's was anti clockwise....but it was never enough wattage to get mine above 24 degrees celicius.....hence I don't use the juwel heater in my tank anymore

On my 200W juwel heater bought 2 weeks back for my rio 190 clockwise is hotter and it now has numbers at 2 degree c intervals. The once I replaced did have a + and - but I can't remember which way round they were.

this is a common ailment of the juwel heaters, well it was in the older ones, those with on temperature scale. dump it and replace it. i don't think it matters which heater you buy, they are all as good if not better than the juwel item.

I hated the Juwel heater. Went out and bought a standard heater/stat applicable to my tank volume for much better controlability.

Problem resolved! :good:
I just bought a brand new 200W heater today
The temperature has droped from about 90*F to 80*F, which is good I suppose.
:)
