Im at a friends house, and need a little help.
One of their Pearl Gourami's is a little ill.
It looks as though the underside and on one of its sides is slightly swollen.
some of its fins look as though they have been nipped.

Heres the trouble though, they dont have a test kit, and i cant post any pictures.

From my very little experence, i think it might be dropsy.

any help appreciated.

Thanks folks.

Wilkesy.

if its dropsy the scales will stick out and look just like a pine cone

it looks as though they already have, but have been nibbled at/off.

Their stocking is

1 x plec
4 x golden barbs
2 x marygold platies
2 x gouramis

and for some reason 3 x convicts.

The scales only begin to stick out in the later stages of dropsy and by then it is almost always too late.

How many gallons is the tank.
Take a sample of your water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.

Once scales stick out fish don't normally make it.
Epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out.
A bacterial med if you can issolate the poorly fish.
He needs issolating anyway as you don't want the other fish pecking at him if he dies.

From what I have heard, I would be suspicious of the Barbs having caused some injury for whatever reason (usually territorial so I believe).

I may be right or I may be wrong but I would definately isolate the poor fella. Not sure on the best way to treat the problem as i've never kept Gourami, but I have no doubt there will be plenty of sound advice to follow.

Best of luck :good:

They've got a 60LTR tank.
They've also raised the qusetion of eutanasia as well.

(BTW Its not my tank)

Are the convicts in the same tank if so it overstocked and also there aggressive.
I would get your water tested asp.
I would issolate the fish to a container at the top of the tank if you don't have a hospital tank.

last stage of dropsy is sticking out scales which is organ failure.

ive tried to see if i can issolate it for them and i cant.
yes they're in the same tank.
i know, thats wht i said.

Bless him R.I.P.
Once scales stick out they rarely make it.
Is the tank a friend of yours.
If so I would tell him to rehome the convicts as the tanks to small.
Also get his water tested.

yes the tanks a friends,
they only got the convicts because they were free, ive told them loads of times to get a new home for them, nothing works lol, they have grown too attached.
if work isnt a pain in the a**e tommorow im going round to test it for them, but for now i recommended a water change.

Tell them to invest in a bigger tank for them.
That kind of you to test his water for him.
Charge him lol a pound for doing it.
