Help Id Fish?

Mad Duff, I have to ask, what exactly is it you think your fish is? Flying foxes do have red on their fin tips BTW. I cannot tell from the pic you posted what it is (because I can't see the head or tail or fins clearly), but the only thing it could be besides a flying fox is garra taeniata/cambodgiensis.

Hi Sylvia, I am almost certain my fish is a False Siamese Algae Eater (Garra Taeniata) the big difference's between this and a flying fox is that the golden stripe on my fish would be a copper or bronze colour on a flying fox and the black stripe along the centre on the body goes into the tail on a flying fox whereas on my fish no colouration extends from the body into the finnage.

False SAE
No Visible whiskers
Black lateral stripe, not continuing into tail
Gold stripe above lateral black stripe
Yellow-red fins, not tipped in white
Sucker mouth when at rest
Very spastic in nature, very rarely still or hovering, semi-aggressive to like kind

Flying Fox
2 forward whiskers, 2 others
Black lateral stripe into tail
Gold stripe above lateral black stripe
Yellow-red fins, tipped in white over 2 inches
No sucker mouth
Semi-aggressive with everything, not a schooler when older

From what research I have done Garra Cambodgiensis is actually a synonym of Garra Taeniata

Hello Mad Duff, I do know how to tell these species apart but thanks anyway. Actualy, it's the body shape that's most obvious to me as the flying fox has a more pointed profile and lengthier, slimmer-looking body while the false SAE is more compact, rounded and has a shorter 'nose'. The color (particularly the stripe extending/not extending into tail) is useful too. The barbel method is very unreliable as both fish do have two pairs of barbels and you can see them on either species if you look closely enough. I was simply curious as to whether you have a garra taeniata/cambodgiensis or a different fish I'm not aware of and, as many people use the term 'false siamese algae eater' or 'false flying fox' to reffer to various different species, I couldn't possibly know which one you thought you had. And, yes, garra cambodgiensis is a synonym of g. taeniata. I always mention both in case the person I am talking to is only aware of one name as these are the two most common names used.

Bre_B - if you'd like a pic of garra annandalei, I found just one on google: http://www.jjphoto.dk/fish_archive/aquariu..._annandalei.htm
