What you have to understand is that if you want to keep African Rift Valley Cichlids then you can only keep other Cichlids from the same lake with the same temperment with them and very few other species which are endemic to the same area such as Synodontis catfishes and African spiney eels.
If you dont like the idea of a biotypical tank with just Cichlids and a small choice of other fish then dont go for African Cichlids and set up a general community tank with prehaps a small new world Cichlid like Rams or Appistogramma.
