Hi

Can Somebody Please Tell Me What This Is Floating In My Tank

IMG-20110802-00055.jpg

Im still on my fishless cycle and i have just put a new heater in the tank since mine went bust for some reason :S the heater suckers didnt stick the heater to the side of the tank and fell off and hit the gravel which made loads of these white bits (Pictured above) float and start floating around. Anybody know what it is?

HI if you heater broke it could be some form of insulation from in the heater, i would just fish it out/vac it out dont think it will be an issue :good:

i just term it as manky stuff which often appears in new setups, you can scrape it off at some point closer to the end of the cycle, dont worry about it, it happens to every new tank i've ever done and gets posted about on here quite a bit.

I sometimes get it on the suction cups of my heater. Have a check there. its nothing to worry about though. :good:

Thanks thought i had done something wrong or sumit like that :)

av just looked at one of the suckers i have to keep my air pipe in place its all over one of them but thats it most of it was in the gravel but it seems to have settles down now a will get my gravel cleaner out in abit and get the gravel cleaned :)

never had any in my gravel, but had loads on the suction cups of my heater and filter. Was pretty gross. Noticed a little but just after I put in my gourami. I went to clean it off, turned around to get the net to catch a loose bit and when I'd turned around the gourami had eaten it o_O that fat little so and so will eat anything! Now he's always mouthing the suction cups... I'm guessing it's either a form of algae or bacteria, either way, clean it out or you may find if it happens when you put your fish in, they'll keep it under control :)

It is just a by product of the suction cups & heater seals. It is quite harmless, just net it out.

Tom.

right cheers guys a asked my grandad aswell when i went over and showed him the pictures he said its most likely some form of bacteria, its only tiny bits in the gravel so much that you cant even notice when it settles down but i deffos do have some on the suction cups i will clean it off and see what happens from there :good:

I have the same thing. It happens in new tanks like ours :).
