I moved my fish from a 96l to a 125l yesterday. I put most of the mature media from the old tank into the new filter and also all the water from the 96l i tested the water uponmoving and everything was fine. i tested the water again late last night and everything was ok i wake up this morning to find a dead angle, silver shark, guppy and 4 neons. the rest of the neons and guppy were at the surface gulping for air my plec didnt seem to botherd. i amidiatly did a water check all levels were fine except the nitrate which had droped from 40 ppm to round about 20 ppm. i have now done a 60% water change and removed all plants the neons have gone back the the lower regions of the tank (but i think that is because they are scared) the guppy is still gasping for air and my plec still dosnt seem botherd. Anybody any ideas on what could be rong. The water has a really wierd smell almost like cat pee and is still very cloudy. Please Help.

Did you cycle the 125l before you put the fish in, or did you just dump in the mature media and the water and call it a go? I would suggest regular water changes to see if the smell clears up; it could be caused by over crowding or a lack of proper bacteria that would break down the amonia. Amonia is the only thing I can think of that would make your tank smell like urine. Hope that helps somehow.

the media was transferd over and left to run in for a few hours tested levels and all the bad stuff was at 0 ppm and everything is still at 0 im just confused lol

Another guppy has just dies and it looks as tho the remaining neons wont last right long either i really cant understand what is going on :(

Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.
Could any chemicals gotten into the tank during the move.
Did you match ph and temp when you moved the fish.
What do the gills look like.

How many fish and which type do you have in the larger tank.
Did you rinse the new filter before you added it to the tank.

Immediate water change.
Fresh black carbon and filter floss.

plenty or aeration i moved the tank water into the new tank so temo and ph were the same all gills look fine i toped the tank uo with frsh water (about 24l) the filter has a new carbon filter the rest is all mature media i have done another water test and all levels are the same except the nitrate

Amonia - 0 ppm
Nitarite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 40 ppm (was previously 20 ppm)

the neons are still at the top of the tank yet my plec still dosnt seem botherd. The water still seems to smell like cat wee tho.

I would carry on with water changes and increase aeration in the tank.
