Help!

I've just come home from a weeks holiday, my neighbour has been feeding our fish.

They are all fine with the exception of the female, who is hardly moving, shes lying on the bottom and not moving much, she moves when disturbed though. She doesn't seem to have any real signs of being in a fight or anything. I have just done a 30% water change, water temp is 25/26 - is there anything else I can do to try and save her?

Thanks in advance!

How big is your tank? Water parameters? Tank mates?

It's 64l, tetra, 1 other female, danio's and 2 guppys, 1 black moore... I have used a 6 in 1 test strip and everything looks in order.

she only moves to come to the surface for air and flips on her side and floats around the tank :(

What type of tetra? They could have been chasing her and nipping at her fins. Any sign of fin damage or anything?
Also, how many tetras? You should have at least 6 tetras and 6 danios for them to happily shoal. The black moore is also not suited to that tank, as he'll probably grow too big. He's also a cold water fish anyway, so he shouldn't be in a heated aquarium.

we have 6 neon tetra who don't seem to go near her and 5 danio who don't go near her either :S

her top fin has a small piece missing, can't see much other damage

It could be the neon tetras. If you could just watch the tank for a while, you could see if she was being harassed in any way.

Could you go anywhere to get your water tested? Since it's only her affected, it might not be the cause, but bad water could certainly stress her out further. If possible, you should try and get an API test kit. They're the liquid ones, and they're far, far more accurate than the test strips :good:

Could be the other female since that is what tends to be the cause for my females fin problems

Was she overfed? Does she look bloated? Some bettas can become constipated very easily.

I,ve learn't by rule of thumb if your fish is sick start by checking your water first. Everyone should have a test kit for ammonia and nitrate and ph. Then you can deduct the probable causes of her illness. I hope she makes a full recovery all the best :)

Hi i just joined.
sounds like over feeding to me. For constipation use a processed pea from any supermarket, but take off the skin before putting in tank. I lost a Betta to Cancer. My daughters exboyfriend told me about the pea. He studided Tropical fish for five years and works in a Tropical fish shop.He now has Marine fish also for he's hobby, he grows he's own coral too. Good luck.

If she has been overfed she should look very bloated....is she? I must have missed something BristolJames didn't mention what she looked like just a bit of fin damage.

Overfeeding can cause lasting swimbladder issues, even if the fish appears to look normal. Also, bullying/injury can cause swimbladder problems as can rapid swings in temp. Nothing you can do about it unfortunately, but most cases sort themselves out on their own.
cheers

just to update on this, it was the other female that caused the problem, we seperated them and put some treatment in and shes now on the mend! the other female kept attacking her!

Thanks to all for help!
