Hi
I treated twice with interpet 9 anti internal bacteria and melafix combined with no change
After that course I did a 50% water change and have now treated twice with interpet 8 anti fungus and fin rot (recommended in the booklet for both columnaris and cotton wool fungus as Im not sure which it is) but both fish still have these protruding white cotton wool growths on their mouths which dont seem to be reducing at all

There is no carbon in the filter and water perameters have remained stable throughout
After initially loosing a few fish to various symptoms I just have these remaining 2 tetras with problems and the other fish in the tank all seem fine

maybe add primafix?
Im not sure what to do next
any advice glady accepted....thanks

hi
i treated my silver shark for septicemia, with first a less effective anti bac then interpet no 9.. fingers crossed hes on the mend now, i was also advised by wilder to treat for another full week even when the fish looks better to just be sure.

ooops this is quite old, but same advice anyway, hope you came thru ok

Anit fungus and finrot med by interpet is no good on columnaris.
I would go in again with anti internal bacteria med by interpet and pimafix not melafix.
Lower temp by two degrees.

sorry i meant that reply to be in the first page, i hadnt got this far when i wrote it,
i hope it got sorted by the way

It says in the booklet that Interpet no 8 anti fungus and finrot is for Flexibacter columnaris?
but...it didnt work!

Anyhow....did a 50% water change on Friday and started treating again with Interpet 9 anti bacteria and primafix
Today the tetra who was worse affected seems to have lost his appetite and is hiding in plants at the bottom of the tank
affected tetra no 2 seems lively and feeding tho I think myself the fungus spot on his mouth is larger and alas a 3rd tetra appears to have a small whilte cotton wool like fungus growth too (
Testing the water daily and the perameters remain good
The tank looks sparkling clean too
All other fish look fit and healthy

I am at a loss......this is just going on and on and despite trying treatments seems to be getting worse not better??
If the medications work....how quickly should effects start being seen?
would salt being added to the tank be beneficial (and would it affect the clown loach?)

thanks again
Jane x

No salt with the clown loaches.
You could do salt baths.
Columnaris spots are hard to get rid of.
Try the med a few more days if no improvement get back to the board.
If its a bad strain uk meds are sometimes not strong enough to kill the bad bacteria, it keeps it at bay but dosn't cure it.

Well I am slightly encouraged this morning in that the sickest tetra is now off the bottom of the tank, is swimming actively and feeding again
I think the cotton wool on his mouth looks slightly reduced too!
The other 2 still have small spots on the mouth but will be watching closely and keeping everything crossed

Many thanks for your continued support and advice
It is comforting to know Im not the only one out here with problems and there are experts to tap into :)

Keep treating don't cut the med short.
Good luck.

Me again
Well I feel in limbo
this is my 4th/5th? week of treatment now
Did another 50% water change today, gravel vac, removed and sterilised rocks and plants and re added anti bacterial medication and pimafix
All other fish remain fine but 3 tetras still with this cotton wool growth on their mouths.....whilst it doesnt appear to be getting any worse....niether does it appear to be getting better

Sorry to mither but any other ideas?
Thanks

Ok stop the meds it not working.
Only thing left now is to do salt baths on the affected fish.
You really need antibiotic but only available through a vet in the uk.

right.....for three tetras.....what ratio of salt to water?
Do I need aquarium salt or just ordinary table salt and how long at a time do I bath them for and for how many days?
I assume I take some tank water out in a bowl and add salt?

Thanks
