Hello all!
I went to this Cichlid auction in Chicago last weekend.
I won a pair of Cichlasoma Spilurum.
I was wondering if they have another less technical name?
Also...I wanted them to produce fry for me, but can't find info on them.
I need to know if anyone has successfully bred these fish before,
and if they are easy to care for? Also, anyother info will be extremly helpful, and appreciated.
Thank.
Ben

Congratulations on the beautiful fish.....although I have no answer to your question......still they are very pretty!

Thanks alot Freshmike, from you, thats means alot.
You are about the best tank set-up guy I know of.
Check this out:
Some guy on a different forum, yes I cheated, told me to do this with my new Cichlids...

OK, here goes. Bare bones set-up. Purchase a clay 5" flowerpot and lay on it's side. Purchase dark color yarn. If you know a knitter, they always have extra yarn. Wrap around a TV Guide size book about 20 times and cut & soak it good. Drop that in the tank near the pot and you are in good shape. Cost; less than $1!!!!!

Does that sound harmful to you? He swears it works for them! I just thought the print could be harmful, along with the yarn, and I DO NOT wanna lose my fish.

Thank you
Ben

My bad.

He sent me this message:

Sorry about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have to remove the yarn first!!!!!!!!! The book is only to give you a general size to make a loose ball of yarn. BTW, you can also tie a few strands of the yarn to a small piece of styrofoam to keep on section near the top of the water so the yarn reaches from top to bottom of tank to look like a plant to the parents.

I'm not so sure about doing this. Yarn could have harmful chemicals. And, I already have high plants for them. Maybe I'll just get the flowerpot, and settle there. And leave the rest to human nature.

I think you will be good with just the pot and the plants.....I can't imagine what kind of dyes could be in the yarn! Too dangerous for me! Good luck, hopefully you have a good pair!

You must make sure the yarn is colorfast. This means the dye wont run!!

Rainbow fish breeders use yarn to make spawning mops for breeding their fish.

The females attach their eggs to the mops, the eggs hatch and the fry then swim away from the mop!!

It is very safe as I have many left over mops from when I bred rainbows.

Note* I moved this from the African forum and deleted the one you had here since it had received no replies.
