Please someone help. I've had a 240ltr community tank set up for quite a while.

The tank has a pair of Bosmani Rianbows, 12 neons, 5 zebra loaches, 2 flying foxes, 6 mollies, and a couple of dozen guppies. ALL has been fine until the last week when we've been losing a guppy a day with shredded tails....AND NOW I KNOW WHY.

I've just witnessed a Bos Rainbiow with a guppy hanging half way out of it's mouth, and I feel sick.....the guppie will be gone within 24 hours.

I've never had this problem, and thought the BR's were good community fish.

PLEASE GIVE SOME ADVICE - I love these fish, but I love my guppies too.

I have 6 other tanks, however, I only have one other one big enough. That has 5 blue loaches, 2 large angels, 2 yoyo loaches, 2 chineses alg eaters, 5 red eye tetra, 4 sisor tails, 4 silver tips, 4 gold tetra, 5 black neons, and 2 cardinals. Would the BR's be better in this tank ????

PLEASE HELP ME......
Thanks glenn

well are the boese's adult size?

the problem you are having is guppies are slower swimming fish and they boesemani's are the opposite. that way they will bully the guppies. its the same as having large barbs and rainbowfish with discus. (people say its a no no)
if i was you, i would get rid of the guppies, or move them to another tank, and not move the boesemanis. they are far nicer fish and are more expensive. i would stress them out by moving them as much.
Gupies are generally cheap and un fussy fish.
BM's are know to be tale shredders along with other rainbows and barbs like the denisonii's. they are active, boisterous fish.

oh and lastly, make sure the boesemani's arent hungry.

** it might be that the BM's are in mating/displaying times and they guppies might be venturing to close to some slightly agressive males.

Many thanks for the reply. the big issue I have is that we have two smaller tanks with guppy fry that will be joining the 240ltr.

Can anyone tell me if moving the BM Rainbows to the tank described above would cause any major issues with my angels etc.

I really want to sort this as I dont want to lose any more guppies, or anymore of my mollies / platys / neons to lose their eyes.

Appreciate any advice.

The thing that struck me straightaway is that, according to your original post, you have 51 fish in your 240L.

I also have a 240L which currently has some similar stocking (Neons, Rainbows although dwarf, etc) but i only have 19 fish and even though many are young the tanks still looks busy at times.

Maybe the BM rainbows are feeling crowded and need some swimming space?

Another of the problems is that you only have 2 boesemani, they are a shoaling fish and are not happy unless in larger groups, that way they concentrate on each other, with only two, they are likely stressed and the guppies are taking the brunt of it. Ive kept guppies with rainbows in the past and never once did the rainbows bother them, but I keep large groups of rainbows.

Hi
I have 6 Boesemani's, 3 males and 3 females in a 180l with 6 angels, some of the angels are vail tail. I have no problems but like Minxfish said they shoal and have plenty of swimming space as i have kept the length of the tank along the front plant free for them to swim.
They are lovely lively fish and display wonderfully in my small shoal. Maybe you could get another tank and move the BM's. LOL. It sounds like you enjoy your guppies and the breeding though so maybe find someone who already has a small shoal to take the BM's.

Good luck with your decisions. Sorry about your lost guppies.

Fiona

Thanks for the help guys, appreciated.

BR's moved to the other tank, angels set the tone by showing who is boss, however, all seems to have settled overnight.

Guppies happier, BR's seem happy in their new home....fingers crossed from here !
