It's usually the other halfs job but he's working away this week and I want to sort it before he's back

Tank history:
Jewel Rekord 70
Cycled for 6 weeks with mature filter media from our big tank
Introduced 1 angel fish from big tank

On Monday we purchased 4 cory's and now 2 are dead

The water stats right now are:

pH 7

NH3NH4 0.1

NO2 0.1

NO3 5

Please help, was it something I've done???

If not would you contact the fish store???

both your ammonia and nitrIte should be zero.
I suggest a 50% water change and keep your eye on the levels.

if you are able to go buy some tetra safestart or better still bactinettes,
both of these will quickly convert the ammonia and nitrIte to nitrate.

Hi there - when you say you cycled your tank for 6 weeks with mature media from another filter, could you explain what you mean by that? e.g. did you add a portion of filter media to the new filter and then just let it tick over for 6 weeks with no fish, or were you adding ammonia and doing a proper fishless cycle? Also, at what stage did you put the angel fish in there?

It appears that your filter didn't have enough of a bacteria colony to cope with the sudden new additions to the tank, causing a slight spike in ammonia/nitrite.

If this is the case then you will need to do small daily water changes until the bacteria colony has grown - shouldn't take too long with the extra fish in there producing ammonia.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with the Safestart stuff now. It does not build up the bacteria colony in your filter - so as soon as you add more fish to replace the dead ones, you will probably end up with another spike.

Firstly thanks both for replying

We have another jewel tank which has been running for over a year just fine (checked weekly and water changes and cleaned etc.)
By mature filter media I mean we took one of the big blue pads (of which there is two in the filter and replaced it with a new one) and put it in the new filter along with a new blue pad

The other half has been checking the water conditions daily and adding fish food to the water and also doing water changes weekly
Everything was fine, we had a spike of nitrite and water changes solved this so after 6 weeks he added the Angel fish

So daily water changes should help??? How much would you change???
Is it something we've done that has killed the fish or were they in poorly health do you think??? They seemed fine eating, swimming etc but then just went all lathergic and then I found them belly up

:( Two more are looking poorly

1 just doesn't look right (not darting about like they do or feeding) the other keeps floating upside down on the surface then sinking again

It doesn't look good

I did a water change of 40% last night and just done another one

Fingers crossed it helps

How long after a water change should I test the water again???

good 4-6 hours after water change for testing - IMO
the ammonia and nitritres are poisonous to the fish and this si more than likely why they are poorly

check your stats, if the ammonia and nitirite is there change the water, theres no set time for changing. have your fish just started actiing weird all of a sudden? if they have might want to check for dead fish / inverts rotting away , need to find out what the issue is.

what sort of corys were they
are/were there any red straks on the corys bodies

I have done a water change this morning, I wanted to know how soon after doing one could I test???

How many water changes a day???

There are no dead fish, I have no invertabrates so that's not the issue.

I have been left to fend for his bloody fish and 2 die and 2 take ill :shout:
(Please see my first post about the situation)

Peppered and Albino ( one of each has died)

Nothing has changed one them at all, no new marking etc.

as i said 4-6 hours is a good amount between change and test
then if you still have some showing in the results then do a 30-40% water change - i would only do 1 a day

nitrates are ok they dont have to be zero
but nitrites and ammonia should be

also test your tap water for a baseline result - are you using dechlorinator ?

 I didn't see your first post

I have just tested and the pH is the same the ammonia is 0, nitrite is 0.1 and nitrate is 5

The test kit is a Nutrafin essential mini test kit and the nitrite results start at 0.1

I used fresh start when I did both water changes

Should I test the water in the morning and do another water change if the results have changed ???

are you using test strips?
if the results have changed in the morning then do a 30% water change

perfect

the angel is going to be a bit large to be in the 70 litre tank long term , so it will need to be moved back to your large tank
what is the stocking in the 70 litre at the moment hun
