Hello!

My name is Cory and I am from Chicago. I am completely new to the hobby, though my father kept fish when I was young and I have been fascinated by marine biology since I was a kid. I only have two tanks, a 40G breeder (my main tank) and a 10G quarantine/hospital tank. I cycled my tank earlier in the year and started up with some guppies and cory cats but I had to break that one down and start again. I am looking to put together a planted freshwater tropical community tank and am excited for ideas and advice. I have included a picture of my newly planted and cycling tank.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?

What is the GH (general hardness), KH (carbonate hardness) and pH of your water supply?
This information can usually be obtained from your water supply company's website or by telephoning them. If they can't help you, take a glass full of tap water to the local pet shop and get them to test it for you. Write the results down (in numbers) when they do the tests. And ask them what the results are in (eg: ppm, dGH, or something else).

Welcome! I like the look of the dark substrate. You might already be aware but the most basic concerns for stocking would be

1. Is your tank suitable for the fish in question? It’s much easier to keep healthy, happy fish if you are providing the ideal environment for that particular species. (Water parameters, lighting, substrate, tank size, decor, temperature, etc).
2. Are the fish you are considering adding compatible with each other? Will everyone get along or would there be conflict/bullying?
3. Is the fish easy to keep or more ideal for an experienced aquarist? It’s better to start out with fish that are beginner-friendly.

How exciting to have a blank slate aquarium! I would talk a walk through my local fish stores and see which ones catch my interest by either their looks or their personalities and behavior. Look up which ones would be suitable for your setup and compatible together.

Thanks for the welcome.

Tank dimensions are 36x18x17 LWH.

My pH is 7.8, and generally stable which is good. My GH is 10 and my KH is 6, both according to the API tests.

Thanks for the welcome, and for the list of questions. I have put a lot of thought into what I would like, and I was going to make a post about stocking in the appropriate forum section. I know some of what I would like to keep and others I am more uncertain about.
