Hello To All From London, England

Hi there EmeraldJones!
There's a lot of opinions being thrown at you here, it must be getting pretty confusing!  I'll just add mine to the mix ;)

I have a 60L tank with platies and a lot of live plants.  The fish LOVE the live plants and are constantly swimming through them, it makes them much more relaxed and playful.  Shrimp will really love live plants and especially some moss which they can hide in and pick clean.

I wouldn't recommend putting platies in a 40L tank as they can grow fairly big.  I think your idea of guppies and shrimp would be fine in a 40L.  Alternatively you could consider endlers which are smaller so you could keep more of them.
Well done for doing your research!

Thank you all!
I went with guppies, we love them

No shrimp yet But that will happen.

Daizeuk I love your tank! Was my fave in Augusts TOTM. I want mine like that eventually.

Welcome!

I have a tank like yours @ 31 Liters with 2 Guppies, 3 Cardinal tetra's, 1 FM Bristlenose, 1 Clown loach, and 2 Ghost shrimp and they all live well together in the small tank! I have live plants in it which aids the water conditions (200 L/h filter as well) and my monthly water tests always come out perfect!

I did have a Male Betta with the guppies to start with but the Betta started to fight with my Red Snakeskin guppy (hes got a huge tail and does look similar to a betta at a glance) so I took the Betta out and gave it to a friend.

IMO Betta's are overrated :p

wow that tank is overstocked, cardinals are medium sized tetras and probally need a 15 -20 gallon tank if not moreplus 3 other tetras, the clown loach need 75 gallons and 5 other loaches too not to mention the britlenose needs at least 15 gallon bare minimum.

I know i went a bit mad on no knowledge :S (hence why im now here :D) The 55Gal will be cycled soon to help relieve the overstock issue,

Its a female bristlenose, apparently they do not grow more than 15cm?

Anyone who's wondering, 40L is 10.5 gal. And be careful with the guppies if you have females because they can get stressed if there are too many males chasing them and also you could end up with loads more cuz they breed like mad. Depending on your plants and hiding places coz most of the babies will get eaten. Good luck!

Thanks Emerald, I was delighted with how many votes it got!  We'd love to see a pic of your tank too! :)

Canning Town

Welcome!

I'm new here to and also new to fishkeeping. I've got myself a 115L (30 U.S. Gal) tank. I've started with fake plants but do plan on adding live plants in time!

Hope your fishy adventure goes well!

It's been a bit of a work in progress, but just added more plants and some nerite snails today, will take a pic when it's darker and post then.

Ta daaa! I'm really pleased with it as a first attempt. Just need to keep the plants alive now. Lots of places for future shrimp to hide. Can't wait to get them in!
