Hello all!
My Name is Age, and I'm new to the world of fish keeping. I bought a 20 gal fish tank a couple months ago. Set it up and was eager to buy fish, but i didn't know where to start. So i started reading up on these here forums, and stumbled across the idea of fishless cycling. I put off buying fish for 2 weeks, then I slowly added Harlequin Rosboras, over the next 3 weeks. to a max of 4 (which is still my current #). I know fishless cycling is better, but i was eager. I performed near daily water changes, and made sure my Harly's went through as little stress as possible. Anyways it's been a number of months and the tank is fully cycled, has been for a while actually, couple months, enough time to add some live plants. Basically what you need to know about me is that I'm now eager to add more fish, and was hoping for advice.
I have a couple wishlists, and was hoping i could help with some mix and matching to make the proper stock for my tank. well here's my lists:
X1 Dwarf Gourami
X1 Blue Dwarf Gourami or X2 Guppys.
X4 Harlequin Rosboras (i know 6 is standard, but they seem to be happy at this #.)
X1 Dwarf frog
X3 Kuhli loachs (though now i'm not sure since they burrow and i have gravel, and tend to vac it.)
Now that was my initial wish list and i started to act on it. I bought a dwarf gourami, He worked out fine. I also already had a dwarf frog that i rescued from a friend. She kept it in a Tupperware container with street gravel. The water was black when i got it. Bought it a 1 gal betta tank and have kept him for 2 years. added him to the tank, and found it difficult to feed him, Managed too however and kept him in my new tank successfully for over a month. Until i made my first impulse buy. >.< I bought 2 Ballon (genetic mutation) German blue ram cichlid after minimal research (shame on me). Fights occurred btwn the 2 cichlids and the Gourami. I intervened and brought one of the cichlids back to the store. This stopped the fighting all together btwn the remaining ram and the Dwarf Gourami. and i thought all was good. then out of the blue my frog died . Had no idea something was amiss with him, but in retrospect i think he stopped eating, because the fish fights. shoulda kept a better eye on him but i took him for granted. after all i had him for 2 years ... Anyways shortly after, the 2 fish got sick. Ive been treating them for a week 1/2 with medicine, but they both died.
So now I'm Back at square one Except i really liked the GBR.
I was hoping i could get some help stocking my tank. i really want to get some slow moving fish that utilize every nook and cranny of the tank.
I was thinking of Some otocinclus for algee control other than the kuhli loaches.
Opinions?
