Hello fellow aquarists.

My names Kev and I have been in the hobby for quite a few years. Housed an array of fish and have had many aquariums, I've recently downgraded from 3 to 1 tank. The tank I currently have is a Low-Tech planted aquarium (35 gallons) that houses 20 Harlequin Rasbora's, 4 Corydoras and a few pest snails that hitched a ride on a plant no doubt.

I consider myself an amateur aquarist with a passion for aquatic life that can hopefully help out on the forum and learn some more knowledge.

Oooohh, that's beautiful! Those swords! (are they swords?) Please tell me which plants they are, I'm still a plant newbie, but really wanting to learn! Is that anubius on the left, and some kind of crypts in the middle maybe?

I don't know if you even need more plants (although I always, always want to add more plants!) those swords are so dramatic and stunning.

Plant newbie? I think your pulling my leg! They are indeed Amazon swords, Cryptocoryne's and Anubias. I'm thinking of having a re-scape, still with low light/low demanding plants but maybe a change. I haven't tinkered with the aquarium for ages so its all still a early plan at the minute.

I do love it but now I'm down to one aquarium so I'm getting itchy fingers.

Oh wow, I got them right! *happy dance* I have no idea what kind of swords, anubius or crypts they are, and have seen people spout off latin names as easily as the alphabet, so I'm still a newbie! I also don't know what I'm really doing with scaping and maintaining yet, so "wild jungle" is the theme I go for. Did you plan to have the two swords like that from the beginning, or was it happenstance that they flourished, and you placed them there? They must have some crazy roots going on. I ask because I picked up a random bulb from my LFS once, and they didn't know what it was either. I stuck it in, and it grew at an insane rate, I have photos taken 4 hours apart where you can see a load of growth, seriously. Turned out to be a dwarf lily, and I had to shift everything around to make room! And a crypt at the front got huge and needed dividing and moving. Newbie, see?


Hmm, have you kept the other tanks? Must be tempting to play with one and see what scape you could create! Those itchy fingers...

The Swords were planed from the beginning and they took off like a wild fire, they get home made root tabs periodically and the water column is dosed with Easy- Life Profito at half the recommended dose, no liquid carbon or anything.

I've always wanted a Red Tiger Lotus to grow from a bulb but never got round to it, I like the fact that it will grow a brown/red even in a low-tech set up.

I haven't kept any of the aquariums but I do have a very small (25 litre) tank in the garage that I'm contemplating turning into ship tank with some nice rock work and a few easy going plants, probably Cryptocoryne's.

I had shrimp in the past and really enjoyed them so its defiantly something I would like to get back into.

Most definitely...

They are the perfect size for a nano aquarium and tank produce that much waste. Cherry shrimp are my personal favorite. (As seen in my signature picture. )
