Do they eat flakes, veggies?

What temp and water conditions?

Are they aggressive in small groups or single?

ANY and all info. will be GREATLY appreciated!!

Also,
If you have any suggestions on barbs that are not "chasey" "nippey" or "aggressive" in the LEAST bit, please lets hear it!!!

Well, I can answer most of your questions, silver...some I'm not quite sure about, but I'm sure someone else can come along and help out too. ;)

How big do they get??
I believe they can get up to 3", but don't quote me on that.

Are they nippers?
Yes.

Are they schoaling fish?
Yes again. ;)

Do they eat flakes, veggies?
I believe they eat flake, veggie wafers, and brine shrimp.

What temp and water conditions?
Temperatures of 68-74°F are good with a pH of 6.5-7.8 I do believe.

Are they aggressive in small groups or single?
Yeah, most definitely. It's best to have them in groups of 6 or more, that way they will concentrate more on each other than your other fish.

I believe cherry barbs are supposed to be nice, but then again I owned a few and they destroyed my entire tank...so I guess it depends on the fish's personality. :/

Hope this helps silver! ;) :D

Tiger barbs are best kept in groups of six or more.....if less 1 of them tends to get beat up...They are not picky eaters..in fact they'll eat anything from flake foods/ vegtables/ worms...they are very hardy eaters...Dont add them with fish that are slow moving and or have long fins....My 7 dont bother anyone and rarely nip each other....the more the better....and when they schoal it looks great...HIH :D

All you really need to know is that tiger barbs kick ass. Get some.

Aggressive, but great! If you get enough of them, that will help with their swimming around and chasing each other instead of your other fish.

I didn't know better and had a gourami in with them and they were fine.

Hey. :)

Just make sure that you don't put them in with any long finned or slower moving fish. I know that there are exceptions...but better safe than sorry right?
They do like to be in larger groups...six or more would be ideal.

These are great little fish to watch...you will have an active tank for sure.

They sound really excellent except I was afraid that they were aggressive :X I don't want to add any stressful situation to my tank because of my Silver Dollars

I guess I will have to pass on them!

Any suggestions for barbs that aren't aggressive!!?? :hyper:

I could give you some more barb suggestions but to be honest with you I don't really know much about Silver Dollars(just that they get around 6"). Do they eat smaller fish once they reach adult size?

I have had experience with both Rosy Barbs and Cherry Barbs. They are both great community fish and I didn't find them aggressive at all. Some people have not had good experiences with Cherry Barbs though.
I have read and heard that Golden Barbs are great community fish.

Tinfoil Barbs are also great community fish but they can get up to 14" so unless you have a big tank that is a big no no.

Anyway good luck with picking out new fish and let us know what you end up getting. :)

>>> Any suggestions for barbs that aren't aggressive!!??

There are hundreds of barbs species, of which maybe a dozen are outwardly aggressive, Tigers are very very active, and will chase and nip slow moving long finned fish. I would suggest they would be a disaster for your SD's - they are stress factories. Kept in large groups, they usually keep their attention fixed on each other, but no self respecting tiger will let up on the opportunity to nip a trailing fin.

>>> I owned a few and they destroyed my entire tank...

Cherry barbs are very peaceful, but, are a non schooling/shoaling fish. They are best kept as a pair, or trio, 1 male - 2 females. Two males together usually fight, sometimes to the death.

>>> it depends on the fish's personality.

That is always a factor - and still people say fish are just simple animals...

Golden Barbs are very quiet, sedate lower tank cruisers. The 4 sub-species of Barbus pentazona resemble Tigers, but are much more placid, (and delicate). Black Ruby Barbs are nice, Rosy Barbs, great things - I could go on, Barbs and Rasboras are my favourites!

A lot depends on what you can get of course.

As everyone has said tiger barbs are agro. :sly:

I have ten (5green, 5tiger stripes) and they are GREAT :p :p

Our 5 Golden barbs were some of the first fish we got and although not active like the tigers are they are equally great fishes :fish: :fish: :fish:

I have never seen any aggression from them and they do tend to hang around together. As they have got bigger they have all developed black markings down their sides which are sort of specled about and really neat (helps with identification :D )

I recommend golden barbs :hooray: :hooray: :hooray:

I've got rosy barbs now and they're pretty fiesty, but don't seem aggressive towards my other fish. They like to nip at me when I'm cleaning the tank (as did my tiger barbs when I had them) but I think it's b/c they think I might be food, not out of aggression.

Hmmmmm, well the golden barbs and rosy barbs seem fairly placid from what you are saying?

"....Do SDs eat smaller fish......"

No, they'd be fine on that end. I'm worried about the SDs to be quite honest!!

Hmm, :shifty: Would Gold barbs and Rosy barbs shoal together? Or will they act as completly different species when mixed? I could try 2 of each??

...................

......

From my experience with Rosy Barbs and from what I have heard about Golden Barbs yes.  They are active fish though and need some open swimming space.

I have never had them together so I don't know if they would do that. They might. I have a cherry barb(which are not known to shoal in the first place) who loves swim with my Rainbow/Ruby shark(another fish known for being a loner).

I wouldn't keep two of each as both Golden and Rosy Barbs like to shoal. Larger groups are ideal. :)

Tiger Barbs generally won't get up to 3". If you want to go by the 1" per gallon rule, consider them 1.5 inch fish. They are unlikely to get much bigger than that, excluding tailfin.

Just wanted to add that i learned something here...

I have 4 cherries. Thought they were schoolers...they dont (at least in my tank!). LOL!

They are all males.. Think I will as 2 females and see what happens.

Question....is there a good book on barbs?
