Hello, I've been away from the forum and fish keeping for about 5 years or so but I am currently working on getting 2 small tanks (a 5g and 10g) set up and getting back into fish slowly. I used to keep a lot of bettas and had a 20g community tank. I'm probably going to get a betta for the 5g and might go with a planted tetra tank for the 10g but still unsure on that. They will be up and running this week so I'll post pictures once they are going.

Looking forward to the pictures, and welcome back to the hobby!

A lot of people say that a 5 gallon is too small for a betta. Maybe a shrimp tank then a betta tank in the 10g o:¿

Personally I think 5 gallon is ok for a betta

I just found the more space you give them, the more they hide in corners or at the top. On his own he ought to be just fine...

Welcome back to the hobby my fellow fish keeping addict lol!

Really? I think a 5g is fine for a betta, however I know people who say 2.5 is enough for a betta. But after those cups at the store that there kept in they should get as big a tank as possible!

I'm thinking the 10g is too small for any kind of tetra. They need their running space.

Thanks for the replys! IMO 5g with a filter and heater is fine for a betta so I am pretty set on that. I didn't see any today at the LFS that I liked so I might have to go to aquabid for that. The 10g tank I am still undecided on, the tetras were an idea but I am open to other ideas also.

If you are undecided on the 10g tank then go for as large as possible, it is always better.

Well I have a 10g cycling but I am undecided on what to put in it. I do have a 20g tank I could get up and running but space is an issue for that right now. I know I could do a fairly nice planted tetra tank in a 20 so maybe I will try to work that.

A 10g is best for things like shrimp, bettas, and fry. You're so limited on the things you can do. At least with a 20g you can get a little more creative, plus the bigger you go the easier it is to keep the water quality stable.

I would try and get the 20g up and running. May be you can put a betta in the 10g (or use a divider and put 2), or put some shrimp in it. However, in the 20g, you could probably put a nice school of tetras.
