Hey Folks,
I have a fish thats about 4 years old, soon after getting him he developed a type of mouldy lookin stuff around the 2 sides of his head anddown his side towards his tail, i was told it was hole in the head disease that he would soon die, but he didnt. Im not sure of the spellin of my fish but i call him Johnny Vegas as its the same sounding name as his own, ill spell it as it sounds, JAY-O-VEGAS. the mark on his side has now got a feathery type of effect to it and he keeps going behind a rock at the bottom of my tank, does anyone know the correct speeling of my fish or what his problem is and how to fix it?

I also havein been dealing with black hair algy, can anyone help me with it as its a battle im losing.......LOL!

Cheers in advance guys! MIKE :)

Ive attached a pic or 2 for u to look at!

By the way, my tank is 7x2.5 feet x 10 inches and holds 109 gallons.

What colour is the mould, is it fluffy velvet looking.

Yo Wilder, yes it is, it would remind u of a white fibre optic light, the way the strands stick out from his body! Sorry the pix dont show much!

MIKE :)

Sounding like columnaris.

can u suggest a remedy? 1 site mentions to use a solution of phenoxethol at 1% in distilled water, do u know wot they mean by that?

MIKE :)

If he has had it for 4 years then i doubt its columnaris.
What are your water stats and is your tank over stocked?

i dont think my tank is over stocked and i clean out a 1/4 of my water every 2 to 3 weeks, my water and every other fish look fine!

ive 2 adult convict ciclyds
3 silver adults, one adult two alot younger
two adult fire mouths
4 new baby tiger barbs
2 sucker pleckos
1 very small albino catfish
and of course johnny himslef.

Hole in the head is pitting and if you get a mgnifyng glass you can see the worm in the hole.

Wilder, its a type of tank that once i put something into it, it will have to die to come back out, if u checkout www.morphsville.com and checkout the lonely friend video( its a bands video that i manage, it was videoed in my flat) you will see my tank less one oscar! You will see that once its in, its staying in....lol Just in case ur gonna suggest i lift it out to look at it!

Here is some more info on hole in he head but i'm no the writer of it.

Hexamita (a.k.a. Hole-In-The-Head)

Symptoms:

Indications for this disease are small holes in the body, particularly the head. These develop into tubular eruptions. Other symptoms may include yellow strings of mucous, which may trail from the lesions around the head. Sick fish may lose their appetite and become emaciated (sunken belly region). Their colors may fade and pale, stringy feces may also be observed.

Cause:

The flagellate Hexamita. This parasite infects the gallbladder, intestines and blood stream. Fibrosis of the gallbladder may occur as a result of infection. Low-level infestations may exist for quite some time unnoticed. Cichlids and Gourami are the species most commonly afflicted with this disease.

Treatment:

The medication Metronidazole (Flagyl). This infestation is contagious, therefore, all fish in the tank should be treated.
