Heating, Lighting Whatever Else...

iv been reading up on freshwater turtles. iv seen it mentioned that they need some sort of uv lighting and whatever.is that supplied from the normal aquarium lighting? if not are there those tube lighting like the auqarium ones that fit onto the aquarium? also if theyv got this uv do they need a lamp. are there any fully aquatic turtles that dont bask, or dont need a basking lamp?
please reply. no one ever replies when turtles are mentioned....

Yes, turtles do need UV lighting. Specificly UVB light! It is a must for proper vitamin D, which they need! There are numerous UVB reptile lights that fit into aquarium hoods. They also require a heat lamp for basking and an aquarium heater! The basking area must give them room to completely dry off. In my tank I have a UVB light and heat lamp over my basking area. I do not know of any species that is completely aquatic and does not bask. They must bask or they are at risk for shell rot, which is a nasty disease and not fun to treat! I have a Western Painted turtle that is in a 55 gallon tank and he is just over 2" length. A general rule of thumb for aquatic turtles is 10 gallons per inch! He is an amazing pet and by far the most interesting little thing I have ever cared for. What kind have you been looking into?
