Heating For a 90 gallon

That's a big tank! I plan on getting a 90 gallon once I get more room!

I've read that 250-300 watts would be good. It may even be better to get two small heaters on opposite sides of the tank. :dunno:

2 250 watt heaters would be the ideal setup.

Whoa, that's a lot of wattage!

Thanks for the information, Sky042!

I'm in Texas so I could probably chunk my heaters, especially in the summer. (I recommend against doing this!)

Ya thanx for the info. One problem, my lfs only has 300 watt heaters. Would one be ok? They are really expensive.

If you're in the states or canada. try www.bigalsonline.com they're much much more reasonable. I picked up a via aqua 250 watt submersible titanium heater for about $18USD

300 watt is definitely okay, if it is submerable place it on a 45 degree angle that'lle work better

I've always worked on the 5 watts per gallon rule. Though I suppose 3w/gallon is enough especially if the room doesn't have highly variable temperature swings.

The tank is in a basement and it is always the same temperature down there.

The high wattage of the heaters makes NO difference. you could have 10 x 250 watt heaters in there, the engergy used to keep your volume of tank water at a specific temperature in contrast to your ambient air temperature will always be the SAME.

The only problem is if you do NOT have enough watts of heat source in your tank. Your fish will experience wild temperature fluctuations.

I've go with the oppinion above, either two 200 watt heaters or two 250 watt heaters. This also helps guard against one heater breaking down.

Yeah big als is awesome. I just ordered a penguin filter from there it was 14.99 compared to 32.99 that my local Petco charges for the same filter. The shipping was pretty speedy too and they even included some sort of glass floating decoration thing for free but I don't really know what to do with it  anyways I really recommend ordering from big als.

One 250W ebo-jager is what I have in my 90...it has NEVER caused me a problem.

I have a 250watt submer. heater in my 90gal. It too has NEVER cause my tank to go less than 80*F (my chosen temp). I had it in my old 50gal, transferred it to the 90 and havent looked back.

I keep it at a 45* angle right in the middle. Always have and it never fails.

The only thing I have noticed is the smaller the heater , the longer it takes to get to the desired temp. Once there, maintaining the temp is easy for any heater, at least in my experience. But I have to say, I always bought my heater based on how big they would be in the tank, not by the wattage. So I probably always had more than I needed.
