One quick question should the heater be fully underwater in a tank or only part of it :dunno:

cheers

depends if it is a submersible heater or not

i prefer submersible myself but both work fine

then again, some submersible heaters will work if just the top part is out of the water

check the manual that came with it

just incase some people dont know, submersable means completely under water, and it should acualy be submerse, u have no choice but to submerse them :D :p

i have a small heater that is submersible but the head sticks out of the water because the bowl is too small for it otherwise
it works just fine

most heaters are now fully submersible but they have a minimum water level on them, so usually the top part can stick out of the water without any adverse effects.

My 5 gallon tank has a submersible heater that also does not fit all the way. In addition to being submersible, it has a water line. I just make sure water covers that line.

Just for my future reference, what's the chance of a heater melting a 5 gallon acryllic tank? or something going wrong and it electrocuting the fish?

If it's not submersible, it will have a "water level" line on it.
