hi, if i use two heaters in my tank instead of one does it cost much more money to run , im thinking of running two heaters as i have a 300lt tank and if one heater fails i have the other as back up,,,,,cheers dave

no it wont take a lot more energy to run 2 heaters instaed of one, you would probably not even notice any difference in the cost of electricity. in fact for bigger tanks it can be a good idea to use 2 heaters instead of one. this makes it easier to dispurse the heat throughout the tank. for example if you wanted 300 w heater to heat your volume of water you could get 2 x 150 watt heaters and place them toward either ends of the tank. however, i wouldn't worry about having 2 set up just in case one fails as it is unlikely a failed heater wold go unoticed by you for long enough to affect the fish. you could buy two heaters and keep one as a spare, set the other one up and then that way if it failed you will have a spare one ready and waiting

As far as I understand electricity consumption 1 x 300w heater and 2 x 150w heaters would use the same amount of electricity over the same period of time and produce the same quantity of heat.
Therefore if one heater fails then the other heater would be able to sustain the temperature albeit by doing more work. Also if the tank is a long one then a heater at each end would make the heat source more even but this is debatable as filter flow does move the water around.

One other thing to take into account if you have a budget, 1 x 300w heater is quite a bit cheaper than 2 x 150w.

Hope this helps :good:
