Hi, I was once told by someone that once a new heater is used, it should continuously be used, otherwise it could break the filament the next time it is used again. I'm just asking cause I bought a new heater (glass), as a spare, but really feel the need to try it out :-(

I would say false.

I have a small glass heater that I got as a spare/hospital tank heater and I have used it on an off and it works fine. I can't see why it would break so long as you treat it properly (like turn it off before taking it out of the water).

Don't forget the heating elemant is continuously being tunred on and off by the thermostat built into the heater. They do not heat on half power, once the thermostate recognises a lower temperature it turns the heater on full bore, once the desired temp is attained, it switches the heater off.

Definately false.

Andy has it - the case is proven M'lud! :good:

Thermostat means your heater is on/off/on/off endlessly - just what you were told not to do!

The only no-no's with heaters are don't take em outta the water when they're hot and don't 'test' em when they're out of the water.
