The light on the heater stayed on but slowly over the day the temp has dropped to 21 Celcius....I took the heater out and there was water and condensation inside it! The white cottony stuff inside the heater had turned black! Now the light wont come on at all and the temp still wont go up...

HELP!!!!!

x

PS. I had my air stone placed under heater to increase circulation of heat...would this have affected it??

I believe that that could only happen if the heater was cracked in some way....

what fish do you have?

I think its time for a new heater unfortunately!

Im not sure where abouts you are and whether you are able to get one now, but 21 isnt horrific depending on what fish you have

Sounds like your heater has blown, do you have a spare? (sorry for silly question) if not you can put a blanket round your tank to hold in the remaining heat till you can get a new heater if possible in the morning. You could try putting a plastic bottle filled with hotter water in the tank to warm the water a little till morning. Apart from that I have no other suggestions.

When you do put a new heater in the tank, you will need to raise the temperature slowly, dont just put it in on full heat, turn it up gradually.

Hope this helps

Yup, sounds like the heater is bad.

No, the aerator would not break the heater. I run an aerator under all my heaters in all my tanks because it helps with heat distribution.

I left the heating on in the living room all night to try and keep the temp up... it was 21-22 this morning in the tank....

I am going to pick up a new heater from Pets at Home today whilst out and about. I only just got the heater last month!

I would take the heater back to the shop if you only had it for a month!

I had problem with one I bought from Pets at Home, they tried asking my lots of questions like how did you postion it in the tank, but I was having none of it and they replaced for me :good:

What make was the heater? some brands are better than others, try to spend a bit more on a good one if your budget will allow it.
