Both my regular heater (Visi-Therm Stealth 100W) and backup heater (Tetra 10-30, I think) seem to be broken. I've made sure they were plugged in, and adjusted the temperature knobs, but the water temp hasn't changed. I do have two other heaters (not sure if either of them work at this point) for 5 gallon and smaller tanks.

Question #1: Will it do any good to put the small heaters in my tank? (I have a 30 gallon tank) Or should I just try adding warm water/floating bottles of warm water in the tank?

Question #2: What heater would you recommend as a replacement?

More about my tank:
30 Gallon tank
Emperor 280 Bio-Wheel Filter
18+ Lemon Tetras (I know it's overcrowded, but it's not my fault - they won't stop having babies!!)
Air Pump attached to airstone (I know I don't really need the airstone, but it seems to keep them from having babies as often.)

I'm going to clean the tank out now since I'll be able to raise the temp a bit that way, and will check back here when I'm done. Thanks in advance for any advice!

ETA - Please ignore the info in my sig - I haven't been on here in a long time, and haven't updated my info.

May as well add the small heater, better than adding warm water as the temperaure change is slower, even if minimal, slightly above room temp is fine for quite a while.

Right now I'm using Eheim Jagers and Fluval E heaters, with the guarantees you cant really go wrong. Fluval E's are great little gadgets.

The Jagers have been on the market longer and have been more proven though.

Thanks! I finally had time to run to the not-so-local fish store today, and buy a new heater. The guy at the store suggested buying two small heaters so that if one heater went, the other would (theoretically) keep the temps a bit warm until I could replace the second one. I will look into the Jagers as my backup option.
Thanks again!

I have bought pretty much every kind of heater on the market in north america and i find that the eheim jager ones are by far the best in tank units. they are also fully submersible. for out of tank heaters i have a hydor eth unit. the only problem is you have to have a canister filter and it does make a click noise every time it turns on or off. very well built though and its always at the temp i set it to. They are stellar on a piranha tank so it keeps less stuff in the tank for the piranhas to hit. i have the 300watt unit on a xp3 and i love it
