In comparison to the Renas, the Juwel 250W and 50W I have are far less predictable. The Renas seem very reliable; look great; "unbreakable"; a built in safety cut out if out of water etc. etc., very pleased I followed suggestions from the board on these.
:good: :good:

I opted for the Rena heaters based on personal experiences and recommendations of the other members here too.......turned out to be a great buy :D :D

Thanks all, I have just got home and again tank sitting at 24c, heater set to 27c and no light on heater.
When I twist the dial to increase the heat the light comes on for a few mins then goes out, I think I can safely say the heater is broken.

If you have a typical heater, not sure about the particular brand you have, you can simply go by the way the heater works. If you turn the temperature a bit higher and wait a few hours, the water temperature will be a bit higher. Each time you make an adjustment just wait a few hours to see the final result. Before they started pretending that a heater temperature could be easily selected using a dial, it is how we all adjusted our heaters. Once set properly, most heaters will hold a temperature quite well, but it may not be the temperature indicated on the dial. I really hate to see you waste your money on a new heater because the dial is a bit off.

That sounds perfectly normal to me. The setting on the dial will never be the same as the actual temp of your water, you just have to experiment untill you get the desired temp.

Its the same as your house thermostat, if you have it set for 18c then stand a thermometer on the stat I bet the room temp will not truly be 18c.

As I understand it it depends on the difference in the temperature you set the heater to and the starting temperature of the water, if there is a big difference and the heater were to stay on till the set temperature was reached there is the possibility that the heater could burn out, so it heats up in stages as a safety feature. Unless of course your heater is knackered

Important safety tip to remember guys. When moving your heater arouns the aquarium please turn it off.

If you accidently lift it out of the water and are holding the glass tube you will get burnt.

i also find if you are putting
a new heater in if it possible
put you new heater in switched
off leave for 12 to 24 before
i find when you do switch it
works as supposed to dont ask me why
but you must leave your old heater
in and switched on

Thats so the thermostat can adjust to the ambiant temp.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but have you checked the digital thermometer? I have noticed that ageing digital thermometer become less accute, thats why I stick with good old science :good:. Have you put your hand in the water to see if it feels warm enough? or tried a different thermometer?

Hope this helps
