I think that my quite large 300 watt heater looks an eyesore on the back of my tank. It is at a diagonal angle too. Is there any certain way that it needs to be postitioned ?. Basically, I would like to have it lay horizontally as near to the bottom of the tank as possible, hidden from view behind my bogwood. Will this be ok ?.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't do it myself, but have seen many tanks in the lfs with the heaters horizontally. In the instructions for my heater, it said that it can be placed at any angle, so long as it isn't touching the gravel.

To my knowledge, it really doesn't matter. I've never ever had mine at an angle - it's always vertical. And next to the intake, so that it can get dispersed throughout the tank.

Thanks for all your replies on this subject. The only reason I have mine diagonal is that the temperature numbers and the red line that shows the temperature are all on an angle so I presumed it should be positioned diagonally .

BTW, Idlefingers, I notice you live in Congleton and just wondered if there are any good fish stores around your way that you recommend ?. I noticed one on the internet once but forgot the name of it lol. :good:

Where about are you? I pm'd Marshall with the same question. :) he recommended Wilmslow garden centre but I haven't had a chance to look there yet - probably going to go check it out this weekend.

The best one I've found is A-Z Aquatics in Crewe (http://www.a-zaquatics.com/). they have loads and loads of fish, friendly staff and a much larger range of equipment than other shops I've found around the area.

I'm in Winsford. There are a couple I would recommend around this area, they are Something fishy in Northwich and Clearwater Aquatics which is at Blakemere craft centre near Northwich. World of water in Altrincham is very good for equipment but didn't get chance to look at the fish their though. The fish at Something fishy are some of the healthiest fish I have ever seen though and the range is massive, only tropical and coldwater their though.

If you have a canister filter, you can get an external Hydor inline heater. It connects inline to the output hose of the canister filter. No ugly looking inside the tank. No worries about fish accidently getting burned on the heater. I use several Hydor inline heaters on all my canister filters.

The reason for placing your heater at a 45 degrees angle is so when the heat rises from the tank heater the inbuilt thermostat doesn't get accidently tripped thinking the tank is at the correct temperature.
I suppose if you place the tank heater in a direct stream of current you won't be affected by this problem

Are they good then ? I did look at them on the Hydor website as I have got a Hydor Prime 30 External filter but didn't know if they were any good. May be the way to go then.

Thanks Everyone

The Hydor's are great - I've got ETH 300's on both my tanks and would highly recommend them, no problems to date, and the temperature is spot on with no major fluctuations (unless turned off of course, lol).

I think I will be investing in one of them then !!!. How much are they about ?

On another subject Kim, what filters do you use ? I think my Hydor is brilliant. Started off with a Fluval internal but it just wasn't up to the job. I am now running them both so I can potentially overstock, seeing as though my external is for tanks upto 450 litres I shouldn't have a problem.

Hi,

Got mine from aquatics-online (.co.uk) for £38.99 - the 300's suitable for 16mm pipe I believe (that's what mine is).

As for filters, I use Eheim 2026's on both tanks too (like to overfilter) - bit pricey but I've got no complaints again, as they've made my life much easier.
