I've just started using this heater so it's been plugged in maybe 3 days. I turned everything in my tank off today so I could add stuff and fix it up, when I turned everything back on, the heater began to buzz. I'm not sure what to do so I unplugged it. It's not a new heater, it came with the tank a few years ago but has never even been opened until now. Should I buy a new one or is the heater supposed to do this? There are no fish in the tank, so don't worry about that.

It probably isn't supposed to buzz.

It is submerged under water, correct?

A heater should never make noises. Your heater probably has something broken and you'll be better off with a new one, just to be on the safe side

The only reason a heater would be buzzing is if it has developed a short & is arcing inside. Its probably on its way out so bin it & get a new one. They are easy to repair but are so cheap to buy a new one that fixing is false economy.

Thanks for the replies! The heater doesn't have a brand name I don't think, just says "100 Watt Aquarium Heater". It came with the tank as a setup deal, I just never used it until now. I submerged it past the "water line". The instructions said water had to always be kept above that line, but I'm sure I messed it up or something. I think I'll just go buy a new one, because I'd rather not get electrocuted or have my house burn down.

true always better to be on the
safe side mind you it would
probably trip the breakers
or blow a fuse first like
but i wouldn't risk it :good:

Yep always good to be on the same side. Not like me, I had a problem with a heater, then it exploded in my tank, and it killed a few fish

Yea id change the heater!
It could be a thermostat problem constantly goin in and out, but that would be more of a chatter than a buzz!!
