Hey All, I recently bought an aquarium and have one Shubunkin in it right now. My biggest concern at the moment is that the Winter is about to set here (in Ohio, USA) and it gets pretty cold here. The temperature goes as low as 5 degree F somedays, and it snows a lot too. I know that my fish is tropical and not warm water. But still I would need a heater for the aquarium or the fish can do without it?
Please reply and releive me with my worries.

Yeah you are gonna need a heater...42-80 degree F is what the recommend for your fish. So 5 degree F would freeze it

the last time i checked shubunkins
weren't tropical fish they were cold
water also is this tank inside or out side
if its inside surely the tank is not going to
go below room temperature

Yeah, I agree, keep it in the house and you'll be fine!

Yes, the Aquarium is inside, in my living room. Thanks for the advice.

A shubunkin is a fancy goldfish. It will be perfectly comfortable at whatever room temperature your home enjoys. Most of the subtropical fish like goldfish actually do better if their tanks are allowed to vary with the seasons and are not artificially held at a constant temperature. My own love are the group called goodeids that are also subtropical in their preferences. They thrive and breed with no heaters in their tanks. My home is kept at less than 78F in summer by an air conditioner and is allowed to drop as low as 68F in winter before I have the furnace come on. My subtropical fish not only thrive but breed freely in those conditions. They produce so many fry that it is a constant challenge to remove enough to keep my breeding colonies healthy and productive.
