Heater For A 1 Gallon Tank?

That's a very good idea. You don't need him stressing and worrying you more. As for the Whisper it is very small maybe a few inches or so. Good luck! :good:

I checked the Wal Mart website, but couldn't find the Whisper heater. I'll have to check our local Wal Mart tomorrow to see if they have it. Do you happen to have a model number or anything that would help locate one?

Yea I looked on the website too and couldn't find it, but looking at the website... they don't have much of anyhting they stock locally  .

I don't know the model number or anything sorry, I knew I shoulda picked one up a couple months ago, but where I'm a college student, it was use the last bit of my money for a fish heater or "real food" (school food isn't all that great :p). I picked the real food. I'm going to probably get one soon for my 1.5-2gallon tank (it's somewhere in the middle not sure where though ) I wish I had the model number for you. I can't find my other one, it got lost in the move from my old house to new and I can't find hte packaging :S I'm sorry... :(

just to let you know, we found a very nice heater that was only about 6 or 7 inches long and has been great at keeping his water at a consistent temperature. (not sure of the brand name, i'll find out and post it if anyone wants to know) he likes to swim right next to it and get all nice and toasty warm.

as for those who think the tank is too small for him, i originally had him in a 1/2 gallon tank (when he was still very small) and he was just as happy as that as he is in his 1 gallon. he still zooms around and does not act depressed/lethargic. i would love to give the little guy as much room as possible, but my dorm just isn't big enough to have anything much bigger. i believe that he doesn't really care where he lives, as long as it's not in a little cup. oh, and i do weekly water changes, alternating between 50% and full changes, and his living area is nicer and cleaner than mine!

If I was a betta I would rather be in a small amount of clean water with someone looking after me...than being stuck in a tank in a lfs that was mucky and with staff who didnt know what they were on about.
size isnt everything

i think if you could get your hands on a 3g tank which would fit a small heater on the back of the tank and then if the betta starts to act wierd you could always divide the tank and stick another betta in the other half and then you wouldnt have to put mirror by side of tank for him to flare at (if you do do the mirror thing which you should the betta becomes alot more active if done).
Good Luck.

The heater is a 25 Watt Hydor Theo with a built in thermostat and easy to set temperature. His tank ranges about 1-2 degrees through the day and night (about 77 - 79 degrees)

what about the water changes in the 1 gallon? daily should be done.

Daily? you're kidding right? A couple of my males are in one gallons, get a 50% water change twice a week and they're good as gold. I think sometimes people overexaggerate the "Proper" ways to keep fish.

LOL still cant belive 1g tanks actually exits, thats ridiculous, whats next, keeping a better in a saucepan LOL

Nothing wrong with a 1 gallon as long as its properly maintained. It's not the size of the tank that matters, its how well the fish is taken care of
i personally think 2 50% water change every week is too little, is such a small amount of water. the waste builds up quickley. i dont exaggerate how to look after fish properly, is comon sence that bettas, as all fish need clean water and a good size tank to swim around it.like i stated before, a 1 gallon isnt lots of room for a betta.i agree its the quality of the water thats important, but the size also matters, how would you like to be kept in a small room for your life?plus in the wild the live in shallow waters, but that go on for miles. why is such a beautiful fish treated this way, i cant understand, i simple small; 2.5 gallon with heater and filter is much better for the fish and yourself.it may be difference of opinion, but im sorry that im not going to back down on this issue, i strongly belive that all bettas deserve better and that 1 gallon isnt a good tank to live in.
there are plenty of tanks out there that are perfect for bettas, so why keep him in a 1g jar?
back to the question, as for a heater and tank, measure the size where the tanks going to go in your house, then have a look around a few different fish shops, as for the heater, any heater will usally work if its designed for that sized aquarium. as for the price, it may be expensive at first you may think, but why keep an animal if your not going to buy what it needs.its not that expensive i dont think anyway, sure if a package deal dont come along and you have to buy the filter, heater and tank seperate, that can equal a costly amount, but then you have the equipment for future, so when your little buddy passes away, you already have the stuff needed to buy another one.

IMO a 1 gallon is perfectly fine as long as its happy, i wouldnt mind living in a small room IMO, but yeah...
my betta was perfectly happy in his bowl(hes in it right now, but hes not happy since i scooped him outta his 10 gallon for himself yesterday to get the heater tto stabilize water temps.)
Anywho he WAS really happy
as long as you make sure u maintain your water.

First of all, please stop calling it a "jar." It is a real tank with gravel, plants, a light, a hood, and now a heater. The tank has been in use for a long time so it is well cycled and the water levels stay clean just as in any established tank.

Secondly, how can you know that he's not perfectly happy where he's at? You don't know my fish, or his temperment. If he were to appear unhappy with his present setting, I would immediately go get him something different. However, he is quite content with his little world. How would he know that he'd be happier in anything bigger if he's never BEEN in anything bigger? If you moved from living in a cardboard box to living in an apartment, you'd think you'd have more room than you'd know what to do with. All he's know are areas smaller than where he's at, so he thinks he's living in a castle. (Plus his episodic memory is probably so short that every 2 or 3 times he swims around it, he thinks he's in a new tank with new stuff to explore!)

Finally, you have to work with what you've got. Compare his life now with all those other bettas sitting in their little glass cups on the pet store shelves. What is their life expectancy (the ones that aren't already dead on the shelf)? A loving owner who takes care of the little guy in a 1 gallon TANK gives the fish a lot better life than that!!

firstly, sorry for calling it a jar, thats just what i see it as.although with the gravel and plants, its less than 1 gallon.i admit i dont know if hes happy living there, but none of my bettas would be, nor would i.i like to give my bettas the biggest tanks i can, the myth that they come from small amounts of water in the wild is wrong, and i like to treat them as anyother fish, giving the enough room to swim around.betta dont have a short memory span, infact, scientific proven, they can remember things like feeding time, owners apperance and other stuff. i realise you have to work with what you have got, but to me, thats like saying, i want a betta, and are going to cut a few corners in tank size so i can have one, and then trying to cinvince yourself its alright, sorry if thats not you, just the way i see it.the one thing i do like about what you have said was that any betta bough from a fish shop is better than living in thoise horrid cups, over here in the UK, they arent kept like that, and therefore i dont see them often kept like that.either way, difference of opinions will always occur, i mean no offence by what i say, just my opinion. we all have different ways on caring for bettas, personally i like to give them plenty of room, with heated water and filtered, with plenty of decoration such as plants and sometimes even tank mates.
i dont want to start an argument over this, but am afraid i will keep fighting my side of things.

I intend to move him to a larger tank as soon as I can find one that fits. Looking at a 3 gallon, but I have to measure first. One tank I'm looking at comes with a Bio-Wheel filter mounted in the hood. How much current do these filters generate?

On the subject of Bettas in pet shops - what is with the blue water they are kept in? Is that some sort of medicine or additive to keep them from getting sick? Or just dye to make the little cup look pretty?

Its a medicine i believe, as ive read about before, and my lfs treats the bettas with meds(the lfs despite keeping hte betta in little cups, i always find the bettas to be still active, and hte water to be clean in the majority of the cups)
