I dont have one in my tank with my syno, I just put it on the glass vertically so he cant rest on it. Heaters dont get that hot when there's water around them, the fish would literally have to lie on it and stay put to allow themselves to be burnt,. Bettas dying because of being burnt by the heater just doesn't make sense, tbh I doubt that was the cause.

raptorrex Inactive Joined Aug 1, 2006 Messages 6,480 Reaction score 2 Location U.K. Jun 8, 2009 #6 my view is, pretty much, the same a three fingers. i dont use a guard, have three synos, but have noticed no problems. i guess though, for £3-5, it may just be worth the peace of mind it would offer an inexperienced keeper.
