Just wondering which brand of heaters everybody likes the best. I have 2 Rena 50 watts in my 30 gallon tank. Although they are suppose to be good, they don't seem to be very accurate. Right now I have them turned on 74, my thermometer says 78, but yet my heaters keep turning on. What gives? Also my temp will fluctuate any given day from 75-80. Is this bad for the fish?

You have to realize that house temperatures also affect it. I keep my Rena 300W in my 50 1 Degree below what I want.

Basically if I set it at 78 it pulls 79. So far I have been extremely happy with it.

I understand house temp will affect the water temp, but if the water temp is 78 and the heater is set on 74 then it shouldn't cut on cause it isn't keeping the temp at 74. Actually one of my heaters is messed up worse than that so I am taking it back. Had both of them set on 70 the other day and water temp was about 80 and the dang thing cut on. Plus it makes some awful noise when it cuts off that the other one doesn't make. I jsut feel like I am having to constantly adjust my temps cause I don't feel that I can trust my heaters right now. I hate that feeling. Will the temp difference from 75-80 hurt my fish?

I wouldn't think it will "hurt" them but it will increase the stress on the fish. But 5 degrees isn't a lot either.. :/

A variation of 5 degrees in the water temperature is actually a lot.

Depending on how quickly the temperature drops, it could bring on a nasty case of ich. And too, a sudden rise or just the up and down changes can cause stress to a fish that could leave it vulnerable to bacterial infections.

It can also cause your corys to spawn. ;)

BTW, if you have a hang on back heater, the water level must reach the fill line on the heater to keep it from responding to the room temperature rather than that of the water.

Well it isn't very sudden at all. Like right now my temp is probably at about 76-77. When I get home from work the temp will be closer to 80 but my heater will still be turning on. So it is a matter of all day that it takes for it to change like that. I'm not really worried about it cause my fish seem healthy. I just don't like the fact that my heater won't keep the water temp on what I set it on. Any suggestions on another brand of heater I could try?

Brad

I use a water heater from Top Fin.
It's working good right now with no problems.
I hope there won't be any problems with this brand.
