I read somewhere (can't remember) that if the heater tube is mounted at an angle, the thermostat will be more accurate. Is this correct?

yep get more radiated heat and less internal heat build up in heater which means it's more accurate

I've never kept any of my heaters at an angle and don't have any cold spots, as the best position is next to the filter inlet to disperse heat evenly.

I'll have to try angling my heater - hadn't thought about it until now. But when I think about it my thermometor shows a slightly lower temp than my heater is set to...

I was thinking about putting my heater at an angle however am worried my Cory catfish might bump into it too much?

Just be aware that fish can get nasty heater burns - which can turn into deadly bacterial infections.
If you have fish that are prone to sit on or near the heater, it's best to get a Heater Guard :)

Bloozoo it's totally off topic I know but I just LOVE your avatar! :D

I have my heater beside my filter in my 126 litre [25 gallon tank] and it seems to work just fine if that is of any help to anyone

Thanks a lot for the compliment missPenguin :D sadly my boy did April last year in a "hit and run" :-( but it's nice that I can still "see" him every day when I log on here.

Yep my heater came with a gaurd already attached, although i have only ever heard of heater burns if the fish get stuck behind them. -_-

If you frequent the catfish and emergency section forum, you'll sometimes find threads about heater burns. I have a twig catfish that used to love hanging on (sucking with his mouth) onto the heater !
So had to get a heater guard very snappily.
