Head Height

If the sump return is underwater, when calculating head height, do you use distance from pump to top of overflow, or top of the return? Trying to estimate gallons/hour needed.

Must have been a dumb question kidda - or maybe no ####er knows...

If the pump is under water, the head height doesnt "start" until the surface of that water.... as the water would stand in the pipe if the pump were off, at the surface of the water ! Therefore any lifting to be done would only occur above the surface.

The "end" of the lift is where the "weight" of the water is removed, ie at the top of the bend of a return "crook" or at any other point where the water "falls"

If the column is fed into another body of water - BELOW ITS surface, then the "lift" would be to the surface of THAT water (highly unlikey scenario... but included for completeness!)
