Hello there. Well as the topic states we lost Poe today. What am I doing wrong for all my fish to be lost to fin rot. I change water once a week, test for ammonia and nitrites weekly and they are 0, fish seem happy and are still eating right up until they pass away....I am using almond leaves or almond tea bags and a touch of aquarium salt ( as on packet for use) and I am still not winning....Help!

That does sound strange. The usual cause for fin rot (as you will probably know) is poor water quality, but clearly this is not the case for you. Have there been any other symptoms? Are you certain it was fin rot?

Well his fins began to look sticky and then later began to "curl" on themselves. I would post a pic but I am not sure I have one.mi shall look to see if I have but not sure. I may have a pic of another one of my late Betta with the same condition. I have now drained the tank and scrubbed it. Will obviously have to cycle it again from another tank, but how long should I leave it before getting a new Betta? He was still eating and still mobile was was hanging around the top or bottom on occasions

So sorry about your Betta!

How long until your Bettas start getting the fin rot after you place them in your tank? Do you still have the 2 apple snails from your signature? Snails add a lot to the bio load, they also can carry a lot of nasties, maybe you would like to try a Betta tank without the snails?

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles and the loss of your fish. I know it can be frustrating, but I hope you continue to keep at it. Unless the tank is cycled or heavily planted, I can't see how the ammonia levels would be 0 after a week. How big is the tank and what are you using for a testing kit? You didn't mention which dechlorinator you use, I'd like to know that. Bettas only need a tiny amount of food and it should be betta pellets, not regular tropical fish flakes. Could you tell us what you were feeding him?

The salt won't hurt, but don't put any melafix or pimafix in the tank. There seems to be a reasonable amount of evidence that it harms labyrinth fish like bettas, gourami and paradise fish.

Why are regular tropical fish flakes no good? They are the base of the diet in all of my tanks, and my 2 boys are healthy little pigs :) They also enjoy algae wafers, which as the package says are "for all types of catfish, plecostomus and other algae eaters".

Hi, I have put the answers to your question in bold type thanks

Mine seem to like algae wafers when offered to other fish too
