I've been keeping community freshwater fish for over a year now in a number of different types of tanks and setups. My current on is a 55 gallon with a Enheim canister filter and power ball to keep the water flowing. In the last year I've picked up a lot of tricks, tips and of course increased in knowledge, but unfortunately that doesn't protect me (or my fishies) from stupidity.

Last night I did a routine water change, pulling roughly 50% out and filling it back up. All fishies were fine, and swimming happily around the tank. About an hour later the auto light timer switched off and the fishies went to sleep. Later my wife and I also retired for the evening. This morning I woke up, and went to my computer desk to check emails and get ready for the work day. I idly looked over at the fish tank, and noticed some whiskers dangling from the top of the water, and quickly realized one of my pictus cats was at the wrong depth, and not moving much.... Upon further inspection I realized the water was not moving at all, and I HAD FORGOTTEN TO TURN THE FILTER BACK ON! Almost 14 hours of no filtered water and the final body count (as of this morning) is 13 floaters and 2 sinkers.

All my catfish, cories, pleaco, and most of the tetras were all goners :( All that remain now are two rainbows, one lemon, one bleeding heart and a farlowella. I kinda feel like the Hitler of fish right now.

Anybody else make a mistake like this that nearly killed your entire tank? And of course the inevitable question is what to do next? Scrap the whole d@mn thing and sell the setup, restock the tank with more community fish, or take advantage of the situation and bring the survivors back to a store and switch to a different setup like cichlid?

Maybe I need to create a checklist for tank cleanings and make the last step: Turn the filter back on you MORON! haha.

oh no thats a real downer nothing worse than finding your fish dead just an accident though i wouldnt give up i doubt you will make that mistake again though i would either re stock or make the switch

Restock and start a new civilization of super fish.

We both know that if you did sell up and run.

A month later you would be looking to buy a new fish tank, you keep fish once, you cannot get away from it :p

Get back on that saddle lad!

Everyone makes mistakes. Make up for it by re-stocking and bringing those fish up to be beautys!
No need to hang up over this.

James.

You would think so, but this is unfortunately not the first time I've forgotten to turn the filter back on, its just the longest period of time before I realized, and or course had the worse results.

Don't feel bad. The only real Hitler of fish is my dad. We had a 10 gallon community tank back in 2000 that my mom set up and when my dad came back from overseas all she did was complain about how much counter space the tank took up. My dad got sick of it and intentionally killed ALL the fish. He squirt a drop of hand soap into the tank one night when everyone was asleep and so we woke up to all the fish dead. He later on commented on the occurrence (about 3 years ago) and told me what he had done. I didn't know what to say. My mom still doesn't know. And mind you...in 2000 I was only 12 years old! :(

As far as unintentional, I almost killed my boyfriends african cichlids after a move. Note to self: don't use hand sanitizer before putting your hand into a fish tank!!!

You've got me worrying about power outages now!!! If 14 hours = annihilation then what if a hurricane hits the southeast and knocks out the power for 3 days??

how horrible! i feel so bad for you, it was an honest mistake people do it all the time.

i personally would feel bad for the survivors and imo it would be my duty to give them the best life possible.

I keep my filter plugged in unless doing more then 50%. I do unplug my heater sometimes and I have forgotten to plug it back in. Then I seen my fish not swimming around just sitting looking pale. As soon as I plug it is and the water warms up they are fine again. My filter was off for about 8 hours once because my 1 year old unplugged it when I was at work and daddy did not notice. My fish were fine They were no happy but they all lived.

Sorry for your lose but don't give up these things happen. Time to start over.

I have had the electric go at home and had the tanks without filter and heater for a whole day, and also forgotten to turn the filter back on after water changes but never lost any fish... Must have been lucky!

I wouldn't say quit, defo get back in the saddle but if you weren't happy with the original layout/setup now would be the time to change things around.

Yea, I'm not sure why so many died in such a relatively short period of time.

You guys are all right though, I'm sure I'd regret it if I sold the tank and got rid of everything. But while I like the current tank setup, I think I'll take the opportunity to do something different and look into cichlids.

I have an external filter in a mature 250L tank that I forgot to turn back on and noticed it the following day and amazingly everything was fine - fish were ok and not even a blip in im my water readings!!!!! :good:

Hmmmm, I always switch the filter OFF at night, because it distracts me from dreaming well.
Was you tank cycled?

I've forgotten a few times but normally noticed after about 20mins.

We've had a few power cuts lately though for a few hours at a time and nothing really seems bothered or put out in the tanks.
