Hi all,

I'm in the process of a fish-in cycle and this has been going for nearly a month (in another two days). The tap water in my area, after testing shows about 0.25 (light green) though after leaving the mixture accidentally in the tube all night it was a yellow in the morning >.< . There is also about 30 ppm of nitrate. I have been doing 3 times 50% changes, changes down to the gravel for 2 days as relatives found this easier whilst i was away and i made sure nothing was washed in tap water :p , and now only 2 50% a day.

I have not seen any change from 0.25 of ammonia in my tank, no nitrites at all and the same, maybe a little more nitrate is my tank.

I have tried to ignore that i have not seen any changes but it does feel like i have stopped, or a cycle has not even began in the tank.

Even though i have seen people disagree about this, has the amount of water changes done something to my bacteria?
Should i do less water changes? (just throwing it out there)
If my tank has prime added to it will it still cause problems with my fishes fins (seen below in details) or could it be fin rot
Coming down to it i am guessing my tank is going to take a lot longer than normal to cycle, i'm guessing about 2 months probably lol
I do not have anything to speed it up (mature filter material) but is there anything that i am doing to slow it down?

Sorry guys just a bit lost, so any pointers?

API liquid test

Tank size:25 litre
pH: 7.4-7.6
ammonia:0.25ppm
nitrite: 0 ppm (did hit bottle hard to shake it up)
nitrate: about 30-40 ppm (this is before a water change)
kH: I dont have a test for this
gH:I do not have a test for this - both of these i did have stripes some time ago shown high GH and medium KH (very rough guess)
tank temp:26 c constant

Tank has been running for a month.

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): Splitting (small part of tail fallen off) Redness and black webbing around tips of fins. No behavioral or appetite changes, flares basically all the time so added a black bg to the tank.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: Use to be nearly 100% a day now 2 times 50% a day.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Prime and aquarium salt

Tank inhabitants: one male betta fish

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): Nothing new, one big aquarium friendly ornament and three silk plants

0.25 ammonia is too high, you need to do a 90% water change now, thena another 90% tomorow.

My water is 0.25 0.o how am i suppose to do that?
I've got Prime to combat this the best i can, unless there is something i am missing?
Surely doing those water changes just adds water at 0.25 ammonia anyway, i would agree with you straight out if my water was 0ppm

All you can do is add Prime to detoxify the 0.25 you have. Otherwise you're doing everything ok. It's a fish-in cycle so expect anything up to two months.

cool :) .. i've just found out a good shop that does mature filter material, so hopefully i'll be on my way much quicker ^^

That would have been my advice had I been thinking properly!

lol We are all allowed our moments :p and i think you were the one to advise me on mature filter media in the first place anyway ;)
