have anyone been sold unwell fish from a petstore.

I have been sold an un well fish from my LFS!! i bought a betta and i didnt notice untill i got home that it had an ulcer on his side so i took it back!!! The next day it was back on sale with an ulcer!!! i wasnt impressed :grr:

P.S this is my 200th post and i am now a fishaholic YYIPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEE

I have to say that my local Petco (chain) has a fantastic set up, really great fish and a crew of very knowledgeable and helpful people working there too. I have bought several fish from them recently and would happily recommend this particular location. I am sure that this is an exception rather than the rule with chain stores though.

Not yet, the fish at the shop I go to are usually pretty healthy. The most I saw was a dead dwarf gourami, but I think they're fairly disease carrying anyway. I agree, pets at home is rubbish. I find that a lot of the fish have internal parasites. I was going to buy some fish from there though ( ), I didn't think the other lfs had bronze cories in, but it turns out they were just in and not labelled.

The labelling at Pets @ Home is rubbish, yep, agree 100%. My Pets @ Home however is very good.

I was setting up a new tank (seem to be doing this a lot lately), just buying what was needed, and the manger came upon me and the sales assistant, he put back some of the lighting equipment, then lectured me on keeping cichlids! And what he said was stuff I had heard here.

There is a place near me, he keeps his fish in terrible water. A few years ago i about 10 tetras from him, driped them to get them used to the water etc. within 1/2 an hour in the tank 6 so were dead!!! :(
I went back and he said there must be somthing wrong with MY water!!! I know for a fact that was not the case. He would not give me a refund. decided to buy one more cheap fish and tested the water is was in, It was terrible amm, nitrit etc. Hence to add i never buy any thing from again, when you go he employs kids and tells them to follow you around the store!!!
I went once around christmas one year and he was setting up a xmas plastic tree, out side the shop, i was just about to go in when he said can you wait a minute. Then he carried on with it for a few more minutes so i just walked away.
The shop is horrible everything is cramed in so its hard to more and it smells so bad.

The only thing ok about them is they sell the cheapist tanks in my area.

When I first started keeping fish, the one small shop that i used went under like 3 months after i started buying fish. I only knew about PetSmart, so that's where I took my business. They were great. Although the majority of fish employees were high school kids, they were all really knowedgable. I research everything for a while before purchasing, so I knew what there were telling me was accurate.

With the big chain stores it's really hit or miss. Some of them have people apply to work in specific areas, and others roate through. I prefer my fish store to the PetSmart now that I have found it, but I had no problems with my Petsmart when I was buying fish there.
