Has My Mum Made A Huge Mistake?

yes, they are parrots and grow to 10". should not be kept in a 29 gallon. if your mom insists on keeping fish, she really should be serious about it. not knowing anything about a fish and buying it is asking for trouble and is also irresponsible.

Don't you think that's a bit harsh. People tend to get "radio d!ck" on forums and its wrong. You could have said - Maybe your mom should try to return them if possible and maybe ask the salesperson if the tank is appropriate. You don't have to be rude.

Edit ~ no one is a master at anything at first attempts.

Actually, I think he/she hit the nail on the spot. I'm not the only person who has resorted to MTS simply because I made an impulse buy.

On a side note: There is more than one meaning to MTS
Multiple tank Syndrome (more than one tank)
Musical tank Syndrome (switching fish from tank to tank)
M0nster tank syndrome (tanks bigger than 75 Gallons, IMO)

:) I have a jellybean fish when I bought the pair I knew what they were. The new fish manager at the store informed me that they were not going to get any more in. The ones that they had left had some color left to them. I bought the pair not because of the color enhancement but because first of all they deserve a home too, two they have a great perosnalaity, they are like a underwater puppys. I am totally against what they do to these fish but again it's not their fault. It is true they cannot be kept with other fish other than their own kind. My jellybean loves to eat freeze dried bloodworms and he loves his cichlid gold pellets, you can buy them at wal-mart. He so cute when I feed him the pellets, only one, he bobs around the tank with it than goes behind his cave everytime and finishes it off. By the way I trained him to take it from my hand. I love them. I believe what you have are jellybean fish and they grow to 4". You tank is plenty big.

Very interesting, groovitudedude! I've never heard of all of those. Musical tank syndrome. well yes. I do seem to switch my fish around fairly often. I'll move this tank over there, I'll add another one here......... It happens when you have a lot of fish.

As for MOnster tank syndrome, I've never had a tank bigger than a 55 gallon because I live on the second story of an apartment complex, but I now have 5 of them. :hyper:

Holy Cow! That's 275 Gallons! I have a 100G, but that's not THAT huge. I've seen like 240's and stuff.

They're are just normal parrot cichlids. They will grow from 6-11' inches and should have at least a 55-75gallon aquarium.
They arn't too aggressive, but will probably try to eat smaller, slower community fish.Whatever happends your ghost shrimp will be soon food if you do not take them back.
As ~T~ had proved true jelllybeans are just convicts selectively bred to create short bodied convicts, so thats why they would be aggressive ( convicts arn't that aggressive, its only when breeding when they go nuts).

Multiple tank Syndrome (more than one tank)-yes
Musical tank Syndrome (switching fish from tank to tank)-yes
M0nster tank syndrome (tanks bigger than 75 Gallons, IMO)-yes!
Edit for spelling:Oh and as you are getting a bigger tank for them in a year or so that would be great for them, however most their growing will be done before that so be sure to keep up on regular water changes.

So...still no real conclusive answer...that's nice.

Is there any reason I can't get a straight up yes or no answer [ or at least the same answer from more than one person] about these fish? Going off on some tangent about the variations of what MTS stand for really isn't helping either...If I need to return these fish I would like to know, or if they will be fine how they are.

Hi Snooks,

I'll try to simplify this as it seems to be getting confusing. OK:

-You have regular Blood Parrots, not jelly beans. Jellybeans are short bodied convicts and do not get as large and are a diff fish altogether.

-Your two blood parrots will get around 9 inches each, so to answer your question, you will want to upgrade tank size in the future.

Not really sure why we had to make it confusing with all the MTS talk, it was completely unnecessary.

So theres your answer, has she made a mistake? No. Will you need to upgrade or rehome them one day? Yes. :)

Thank you so much...I have been looking into getting her a 90 or 100 gal within the next year or so... ( mainly so I can convert her existing tank into a SW one :D ) so rehousing will not be a problem.

You could have told us that before you told us about your irresponsible mother's decision. And BTW, good luck getting a new tank.
