has anyone used chemicals for removing algae?

From what I understand, keeping algae in check is all about balance. You need to balance light, CO2 content, and nutrient levels.

Sounds like high phosphates might be the problem to me, too. If no test is available, you could call your local water treatment plant (assuming you use municipal water) and they could give you an idea of at least what the phosphates are leaving the treatment plant.

You could also go blind, and try a product like AP's Phos-Zorb, to absorb phosphates.

However, do you happen to know the KH of your water?

I'm not sure what the carbonate hardness is of the water in the tank, other than generalising it as being pretty hard from the tap.

Soon as I get paid in my new job I think I might order some Phos-Zorb or something simliar, I was talking to a friend who also keeps TF and has sucessfully used chemicals to remove algae for it to never return again. Interesting stuff!!!
