Pacus definitely fall into that category of fish that many shops sell fairly freely but, sadly, not many people are capable of keeping. They're pretty common fare at my LFS's. Pacus get BIG. Really big. Not too long ago one of my LFS had one in a 29-gallon (way too small! - but I suspect that was the best they could do) that someone had returned, not knowing it would get that large. I understand that buy-it-then-HOLY CRIMINY IT'S FREAKIN HUGE-and-return-it is very, very common with pacus. The fish shops are as much to blame for this as the owners, though. The one I saw recently had to be the size of a frisbee disc - and boy did he have teeth. Poor guy. The lady at the LFS said she's seen them as large as a manhole cover. Just believe it - they get BIG.

I wonder how many pacus are "released" into lakes and ponds. I hope it is not as bad as all of the idiots that buy their kids rabbits for Easter then "release" them into the wild come summer.
