He’s a beast… it’s hard to take pictures in this tank, it’s not a display tank, only visible in my work area

It’s a 2 year old Bichir… they even sell cute little 2 inchers at the local pet store, and they can’t keep them in stock… there’s going to be a lot of single fish species tanks in this area, in the next couple years, or a lot that get flushed… I don’t think we have to worry about them becoming invasive, here in the cold… but they could become a problem, in the southern states, if those local pet places are selling them, as fast as my local…

This guy will catch a dozen comet gold fish overnight… at least the rosy minnows provide a challenge, and it takes him a week to catch 20

As big as the head was, on the 10 inch common Pleco, I would not have thought it possible…

They come by the bucket here, as the new common fish for keepers of predatory fish. That's a very big thing in the hobby now - mid sized predators.

Some of the species get very large. I've unpacked some hefty ones. They are powerfully muscled creatures. They get bought, they get fed various other fish, they grow, and then the owners get bored or don't want to buy large enough tanks, and they are left to die of bad conditions, or actively killed. Some will be dumped in the wild, and that will lead to more calls to ban the importation of exotic fish.

I know @Magnum Man has experience with large fish, so I don't see his keeping them as this pattern. Not at all. But a lot of kids buy them, and the trajectory down is predictable. They don't seem to have a big following among people who think ahead and take a long view.

they are known for doing crocodile rolls... I didn't actually witness it going down, but looked like big snake with a fat belly, for a while, until it passed the "pellet" I didn't see that come up or out either, but looked like an owl pellet, when they cough up the bone balls, in the tank later

Just an FYI... I got it to eat Mosquito larva, and other aquatic bugs, out of the tank I was growing Duckweed in, outside ( I fed the Duckweed, to the Tilapia I was raising... winter came, and it moved indoors, by next spring, I was sure it would have no interest in mosquito larva, so it took over a 55 gallon... i think this one is currently half the size it will grow into... this species are listed as maximum size of 35 cm... hmm, I guess that's only 14" ( I didn't want one, that gets 3 feet long ), he's currently 11-12 inches, so just a little more growing...

Do you mean HE swallowed the pleco head first ?!?

That's worse than swallowing a Christmas Tree !!!
Don't knock xmas trees. If you take the ornaments off, and remove the lights (and any stars or angels on top), they aren't bad with poultry seasoning and olive oil.

I haven't swallowed one whole myself, but there's a TikTok challenge where....

to quote ( Ule Gibbons ) pardon the phonetic spelling... " Pine Trees... many parts are edible" ... I never knew who that was, but I remember the cereal commercial they quoted him...

Yeah, the sap was rich in vitamin C. But they didn't eat the tree!

Spruce beer, well made, is one of the finest things on the planet. My wife thinks it's a form of floor cleaner, but when you can find old fashioned, real spruce beer - heaven for the taste buds.
